One level of population data we will need for our project is population by census tract. What is a census tract, though? It is a somewhat arbitrary, small, and relatively permanent statistical subdivision of an area used to track population for the census, usually every ten years. Our goal is to aggregate data from these census tracts and instead track population by island.
It seems the city of Venice has not yet published the detailed census data from the 2011 census, so using the Comune di Venezia interactive tool the closest I can get is median age by census tract. This does allow for us to visualize the groupings of census tracts on the individual islands, which will be useful in the future. Shown below is an example, analyzing the median age of males and females on Gesuiti. Gesuiti has fifteen census tracts, but the number varies per island. What we will have to do is determine which census tracts belong to which islands, group them accordingly, and then aggregate and report the population data. Seems simple enough!
