IDAHO OVERVIEW
Idaho is mostly a rural state. The Boise area is the most densely populated area. The Northern part of the state is forest covered mountains. The Southern part of Idaho is rangeland. Police services are mostly provided by Idaho State Patrol, County Sheriff Departments, City Police Departments, Indian Police Departments, and some federal agencies. Structural firefighting and technical rescue services are provided by County Fire Departments, local fire departments, military fire departments, and some Indian Fire Departments. Many wilderness areas are 'legally" uncovered by structural fire/rescue departments but I imagine that the closest available resource will always respond if possible when needed. Not sure if they have any methods to get Jaws of Life into the wilderness areas if needed, Ambulance services are provided by county ambulance services, regional ambulance services, local ambulances, and others. Medevac helicopters are provided statewide by various providors. Wildfires are fought by federal agencies (mostly BLM and USFS); by local FDs; and by State Forestry / Dept of Lands and Timber Protection Associations. There are probably a couple of Indian Wildfire agencies also - Fort Hall comes to mind.
Timber Protection Associations (TPA) essentially function as county units of State Forestry / Idaho State Dept of Lands. Douglas TPA covers Douglas County - Clearlake Potlatch TPA covers Clearwater County ish - Coos TPA covers Coos County ish. These are essentially private non profit companies that protect state, private, and some federal timberlands. They are funded by taxes and forest assessments iirc. None of the timber companies have their own wildland fire crews afaik - they rely on IDL and the TPAs. The TPAs seem to be unique to Idaho - cant think of any other state that has them - except that NC State Forestry is half funded by state money and half funded by County money - so that is similar in an intergovernmental sense. - 8/3/2023 - actually - Douglas and Coos are in Oregon - so it seems that 2 states have TPAs. There is a Southern Idaho TPA also iirc - must check further.
There might be Rangeland Fire Associations also - ranchers are given old brush trucks by BLM - they respond to range fires - this is new in the last 20 years iirc - 6/25/2025
Historically - police have operated on UHF (453 mhz and 460 mhz) - fire and ambulance have operated on VHF highband (150 mhz to 170 mhz). There is a new state 700/800 trunked radio system - not sure how much area it covers. 155.28 and 155.34 have been longtime EMS channels which have statewide connections to dispatchers in Boise. Most counties have one 911 center that handles most dispatching countywide. (Possibly in the 1950s and 1960s many agencies operated on 39.82 Mhz iirc)
MAPS
Update July 23 2020 - starting now - the Idaho statewide fire stations map will be the 2ndary map for Idaho. The primary maps will be the county maps. This is the same procedure that we have used for all of the other 50 states. It makes life so much simpler when you can use 1 procedure to cover the entire country. As a reminder - primary maps get updated first - in theory - therefore they are more complete and accurate - in theory.
