Do their gay vestments his affections bait?
That’s not my fault; he’s master of my state.
What ruins are in me that can be found
By him not ruined? Then is he the ground
Of my defeatures. My decayèd fair
A sunny look of his would soon repair.
But, too unruly deer, he breaks the pale
And feeds from home. Poor I am but his stale.

Zijn snolletje zal zijn gezelschap zeker appreciëren,
terwijl ik thuis smacht naar een enkele blije blik van hem.
Heeft vroege ouderdom de verleidelijke schoonheid
van mijn arme wangen geroofd? Dan is dat zijn schuld:
En dat mijn conversatie plots te saai is en mijn verstand te droog,
dat mijn vlotte babbel afgestompt is,
dan heeft zijn botheid dit op zijn geweten.
Wordt hij misschien door haar garderobe verleid?
Dat is niet mijn schuld; Ik draag wat hij wil kopen:
En alles wat in mij kapot is, heeft hij zelf gedaan:
Hij maakte mij tot het misbaksel dat ik nu ben.
Eén blik van hem zou mijn verval herstellen,
maar hij, het valse hert, breekt los,
en zoekt nu buitenshuis naar frisser groen,
want mij vindt hij te oud.

Alleen gevoelloze dwazen verdragen zulke smaad.
Zijn oog dwaalt nu over een ander lief,
want anders was hij allang thuis bij mij.
Je weet toch dat hij me een ketting heeft beloofd?
Hij mag ze houden voor mijn part,
als hij maar naar zijn eigen bed terugkeert,
Zelfs het fraaiste sieraad verliest zijn schoonheid,
en hoewel goud door anderen aangeraakt, weerstaat,
zal het erdoor wel slijten.
Een fatsoenlijk man doet het die schande niet aan,
en nu mijn schoonheid hem niet meer bekoort,
zal ik wat rest met tranen doen verdwijnen
tot ik zelf sterf.
