Project #2017 Winter-Middle School Observations for Ingraham
Teacher: Sara Kerr, Ingraham International High School
Timeframe: 1 day
Estimated Hours or Cost: 1 sub day
Description: Observe Spanish classes at Hamilton International Middle School and possibly Jane Addams. I would like to gain more information about our feeder middle schools as I am new to Ingraham. I would like to learn about their programs to help with transition from 8th grade to 9th grade. I would like to learn more to help ensure that students are placed into the correct world language classes as 9th graders.
Deliverable: Write up a brief reflection and any recommendations
Due Date: March 22, 2017
Status: Approved Michele Aoki 3/7/2017 - Completed March 22, 2017
Reflection 3/16/2017
I learned a lot yesterday during my visit to Hamilton. I had never seen an immersion program before. The teachers and students are amazing! I was able to talk to Brandon Severance about what level Hamilton feels the SLA 3’s should enter when joining Ingraham next year. Based on skill level, several seem to be ready for Level 4. However, talking with my department, it seems that 9th graders are often not ready as far as maturity for the themes covered in level 4. It also gets tricky with IB testing if they enter level 4 as 9th graders. The ideal would be to have an AP class for 9th graders. At this point, we do not have enough FTE to offer that type of class. Hamilton has 5 Spanish teachers. We have 3. We will continue to discuss this situation. …I also learned that Hamilton uses the Avancemos textbooks. Hopefully we can also all start using this book here at Ingraham if we are able to get a grant.
