Getting on the Path to Proficiency

This workshop for all secondary World Language teachers is intended to introduce teachers to the TELL Project (Teacher Effectiveness for Language Learning www.tellproject.org), which is aligned to the Danielson Framework for teacher evaluation. Teachers will learn about new resources (posters, handouts, and videos) created by TELL to illustrate the Path to Proficiency through effective language teaching. Topics include: Developing Learning Targets, Conducting Performance Assessments, Checking for Understanding,Using the Target Language and Providing Comprehensible Input, Empowering Students to Use the Target Language, and Engaging Language Learners. In addition to introducing these great tools from TELL http://www.tellproject.org/tools/startalk/ we will have updates from the summer PD projects that teachers did https://sites.google.com/site/seattleworldlanguages/calendar/summer-pd-projects plus plans for the year.

AGENDA:

On tables... Priorities on World Languages Needs Assessment.

1. Introductions - Icebreaker

How do we know if we're effective teachers?

Introduce yourself to 5 other teachers, note where they teach, what language, and one thing they think makes them an effective teacher, and one thing they'd like to work on.

Name:

School:

Language:

What makes me effective:

What I'd like to work on:

2. TELL Project www.tellproject.org

Purpose: http://www.tellproject.org/about/purpose/

(talk about it in pairs - identify key concepts, share out)

Foundational Criteria (handout) http://www.tellproject.org/tools/foundational/

(Individually examine; identify which ones seem most important to you individually -- Think: If I worked on this, I would be a more effective teacher. When my principal evaluates me, I'd like them to observe this about my teaching. Maybe post them and let teachers vote with dots for the areas that they would most like to work on. Or maybe try online mentimeter to gauge interest.)

3. TELL Professional Learning Resources to Support STARTALK-Endorsed Principles

http://www.tellproject.org/tools/startalk/ - print out infographic of each

Have teacher leader at different tables, facilitating conversation about each one. Do 3 rotations of 10-15 minutes each:

4. Path to Proficiency

Google "Path to Proficiency" to see different graphics that have been created.

Or check out: http://www.lynnjohnston.com/?p=46.

What are key concepts that get conveyed?

On posters: create a graphic that we could use in Seattle. Maybe the Space Needle? The first platform is Intermediate. It takes a LOT to get from there to the rotating restaurant (Advanced) and it takes even more to get to the observation deck (Superior).

5. Summer PD Projects

6. SPS World Languages - Announcements and Updates
