I have the utmost respect and fondness of both the Rev Stevens and the work carried out by him and his colleagues at the chaplaincy at Southampton University. Many individuals and groups have benefited and no doubt continue to benefit, as I did, during the precious time we have or had at university. To close the chaplaincy would mean the loss of a critical space or worship, fellowship and exploration of faith and self. The door is always open for a friendly chat with the chaplains and regulars alike, a cup of tea (invariably!) is on offer in a safe haven away from the hoi palloi of campus. I would urge the University to engage with the relevant groups to ensure that this threat is not carried out. Losing the garden space was a blow, but to lose the building/service itself is unfathomable - the effect of job losses is one thing, to deprive a whole student population of a chaplain is another. So, for the sake of the thousands of students past and present, please keep the adored Rev Stevens and the chaplaincy open so that their great work can continue to flourish.
