The work of the Chaplaincy and Rev. Stevens is well known and recognised by the students of the University of Southampton, even those like myself who are not religious. I cannot think of anywhere else on campus that is quite so diverse, inclusive and welcoming.
I am led to believe that the University Counselling Service is currently stretched to breaking point, and so any service that allows students who simply need to talk to someone to drop in and have a chat is utterly invaluable. I have little doubt that the people who have been helped in the past would say the same thing.
It staggers me that closing down the Chaplaincy is even being considered. I appreciate that cost-cutting measures have to be made in this financial climate, but I believe that the wholesale removal of this important service is not the answer.
