University of Southampton Chaplaincy Association Press Release 3/3/2010
Since news broke in November 2009 that the Diocese of Winchester would be withdrawing funding for the Anglican Chaplain to the University of Southampton, a passionate group of students have been driving efforts to keep their beloved chaplain in post.
The student-led Association is continuing in its aim to find the £21,000 needed each year to fund a full-time Protestant Chaplain and the running costs of the Chaplaincy, between its benefactors and partners. The Association’s Fund-Raising Group is meeting to consider exciting and innovative events to create both awareness and resources, and a recent Pancake Party raised approximately £35. Details of such events will become available in the near future.
Through a press campaign, including a 1000-strong group of online supporters, the Association has now gathered over £5,000 annually in pledges to fund Rev Simon Stevens in his continuing ministry, should the need arise. Meanwhile, discussions continue with ecumenical partners and the University of Southampton — both of which have been encouraging.
We have become aware that the Diocese of Winchester and the Free Church Chaplaincy Council are working towards a discussion about the Southampton University Chaplaincy. No information is forthcoming as to how they are currently progressing and so the Association are seeking to gain pledges in order that the Diocese can use this as a resource if necessary.
