Close Southampton University chaplaincy? For me this is an awful thought. The chaplaincy is not only a support network, a spiritual home and a safe haven, it is also a place that where people can be themselves and make friends for life. For me I arrived at Southampton University a fresh faced youngster, one of the youngest in my year, homesick and somewhat scared! For me the chaplaincy was a ready made community. My first impression was the fresher’s week BBQ where I met Simon who’s reaction was ‘A real Anglican!’ followed by a big hug. Although slightly surprised I knew that I had found a home. Chaplaincy and the friends I had made there where there for me when I had relatives and friends pass away, they where there for me when work got tough, when relationships went wrong and when I struggled with my faith. They were supportive whilst not dictating to me and without their support and friendship I probably wouldn’t have finished my course and become the qualified professional I am today. Equally as importantly without their support I may not have come back to faith after my crisis, they enriched my life and helped me to survive and grow. I owe chaplaincy a lot as may others do and can not bear the thought that future students will not have the chance to experience and benefit from this truly individual and special place.
