Holkrans (golden Gate)

Holkrans Caves - Meiringskloof Nature Reserve - Golden Gate National Park

During the Boer war the well-hidden cave Holkrans (in the Meiringskloof Nature Reserve - Golden Gate National Park) provided refuge to Boers and their families. According to a hiker/writer (pen name-village idiot) who has been there and guided by a local farmer on who’s land they crossed to reach the caves, there appears to be a kraal of sandstone which may have been built by the Boers to either keep sheep or corral horses.

It would have been difficult for British troops to have found it. Two large excavations in the cave were used by the Boers to hide their arms and The cave also has a number of what would have been stone huts, long since fallen into disrepair.

A small crack in the rocks lead to another well concealed ledge that could have served as a good vantage point to see not only the veld and part of the old road leading from Bethlehem.

According to research it would seem that Boer Commandos would regularly hide cattle and sheep as well as other supplies in well-hidden areas as a supply depot and it is possible that this very position served the same purpose.

Legend has it that the British soldiers often heard the women and children's voices in the hills but that they could not detect where the sound came from.
