Baardskeerdersbos

Baardskeerdersbos is first mentioned in documents from 1660: Jan van Riebeeck the founder of the Cape of Good Hope settlement sent an expedition-team of five men to explore. They reported on the valley and its Khoi-residents. They may have encountered small spider-like creatures called "Baardscheerders" ("Beard shavers") reputedly cutting human hair for nest-making purposes. Hence the name of this town - Baardscheerdersbos ("Beard Shavers Bush")

The valley in the heart of the Overberg is relatively undisturbed and original. It is 25 km from Gansbaai en-route to Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of Africa. this area is also home to several pristine and rare fynbos habitats of the Cape Floral Kingdom.

The church was built in 1921 and some of the original mud-stone cottages can also be seen in the town.
