Aasvoelkop, Aasvoelberg

Aasvoelkop (near Zastron) In 1838 Jan Hendrik de Winnaar moved his home to the foot of a sandstone mountain named Aasvoelberg (vulture mountain) the home of these scavenger birds.

He did not stay there for very long.

All settlers were, at one point after the Smithfield meeting with Sir George Grey, driven out of the area . In 1858 war was declared by the Orange Free State against the Sotho people.
