By most accounts, the immediate October crisis began when US spy planes discovered nuclear missiles being transported to, and then assembled, on the Soviet-backed island of Cuba, a mere 100 miles or so from the American (President Castro or Cuba and Khrushchev in 1961)
state of Florida.
