Winston Churchill's close friendship with the American politician Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882 - 1945) was a long and strong one.
They first met in 1918 when the latter was Assistant Secretary of the Navy during the First World War.
By the late 1930s, as Britain struggled against the encroachment and eventual onslaught of Nazi Germany, Roosevelt had become the President of America.

When the Pearl Harbor was attacked on 7 December 1941 and Roosevelt declared war on Japan, Churchill was finally able to cement Anglo-American relations into what he termed "The Grand Alliance.
