This is an positive and optimistic view of how British colonisation affected Singapore, resulting in a rich heritage today. The event here is the Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Hsien Loong, opening the Singapore Bicentennial commemoration in January 2019.
"The Ruins of Empire: Asia's emergence from Western imperialism" is a lengthy and scathing perspective on colonialism in Asia.
For a counterpoint to the above, this is an interesting opinion here, which argues that imperial relations was more collaborative than coercive.
The focus of this Unit is the 19th century when European colonial powers expanded into Southeast Asia.
We will discover:
(a) Why the Europeans came to SEA and what factors enabled them to dominate the landscape and people.
(b) How did local Asian societies respond to the new European administration.
(c) The impact of this interaction between European and Asian peoples.
