Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective remains one of the world's most endearing literary figure. His adventures and exploits give us an insight into life in late 19th century Victorian England and his detective methods have also spawned an interest in observation and thinking skills.

SHERLOCK HOLMES IN THE MOVIES
Many many films have been made on Holmes starting from as early as the 1920s and 30s. I have three favourite actors who I think portray the great detective quite well. Here they are! Have a look and decide who you think is best!
Basil Rathbone played Holmes from the 1930s to the 1950s. His acting was sound and effective rather than flamboyant. His films were often not from the original stories and had a distinct contemporary feel; some were in fact, set during the Second World War!
I very much liked the 1980s Granada series, each an hour long, and mainly closely interpretations of the original stories themselves. Jeremy Brett (left) was, to me, the quintessential Holmes - sharp, shrewd, clever, idiosyncratic, individualistic and very quirky.
My third choice for best movie Holmes is Robert Downey Jnr. His two movies appeared recently (2009 and 2011) but, having been brought up with the neat, fastidious and clean-shaven Brett, I could not quite get used to Downey's interpretation of the detective. His Holmes is messy and unkempt in appearance but thankfully retains all the intellectual prowess of the original. His nemesis, Professor Moriarty, is excellently acted out in this series.
