Harry S. Truman served as the United States' 33rd President. He occupied the White House from 1945 to 1953, succeeding Franklin Roosevelt in the dying months of World War Two.
Truman's presidency coincided with the rapid intensifying of the Cold War.
He was instrumental in several important and strategic initiatives such as the Truman Doctrine, who advocated military assistance to any countries struggling against the advances of communism. This doctrine also laid the foundation of the forming of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
The Marshall Plan was another scheme that took shape in his presidency. This Plan ensured that countries that needed financial and economic help for the restoration of their economies would find an ally in the USA.
President Truman speaking to the House of Representatives on 12 March 1947, in an attempt to persuade the members of Congress to take an active stance against communism.
The text of his landmark speech is reproduced in full below.
The speech revolved around assisting the faraway European states of Greece and Turkey.
Why should the USA involved themselves there?
Was this not too soon after the conclusion of World War Two?
