Pre-Algebra

Tutor: Karen Hustedde

Description: This Pre-Algebra course will prepare you students to enter Algebra 1. Your students will learn the essential principles of algebra including expressions, solving equations, coordinate graphing, probability, statistics, functions, and more.

Rukavina Academy is excited to be using Master Book’s Principles of Mathematics- Book 2 as its curriculum this year. This curriculum will guide your student through Pre-Algebra while building on a Biblical worldview. In fact, your student will learn how the consistencies we see in mathematical concepts proclaim the consistencies of a faithful God!

So why take an in-person math class? Good Question! Here are my goals in teaching your students:

  • To give instruction for the upcoming lessons AND have students practice these new skills with guidance (often with games!)

  • Guide students in building their own Interactive Math Notebook throughout the year, helping students learn how to take notes and giving them a resource to refer to when they need some help.

  • Encourage students to show their work, as they are more likely to learn from their mistakes and excel in math courses.

  • Answer specific questions on homework problems.

  • Monitor students’ understanding of the material through occasional in-class quizzes and at-home tests. Tests will be administered at home by the parent, but I will correct them to assess where each student is at.

Prerequisite: Students should be comfortable with basic math skills (including rounding and working with decimals & fractions), unit conversion, negative numbers, geometry formulas (finding perimeter, area, and volume), and exponents. They also need to have good problem-solving skills. If any of these skills are lacking, Math Foundations would be a better place to start.
