American Literature (Offered every other year. Currently offered 2022-2023)

Description: A full year course designed to survey America's literature from its beginnings to the present. In a time-line fashion from a Christian worldview, each literary era will be introduced, discussed, and viewed within its historical time frame as representative selections from each era are studied. In this course, students will develop a Biblical foundation for understanding literature to help them face political correctness and postmodernism during the college years and in the world at large. While focusing on comprehension, analyzing the elements of literature, and understanding the author’s worldview, we explore how the world of literature is not only influenced by new worldviews, but is actually a force that helps transform worldviews and culture.
Classroom experience will consist of lectures, short weekly quizzes, and class discussions. Homework will include miscellaneous assignments on readings from the textbook as well as some additional readings provided by the tutor culminating in an open-book/open-note final exam at the end of each semester.
Taking this class could easily prepare a student to take the CLEP Test for American Literature as long as the student is willing to study and work diligently, doing all the assignments provided as well as extra credit opportunities given along the way! Sample CLEP tests and a study sheet will be emailed at the end of the year to help any interested student prepare.
