Chemistry Lab

Chemistry Lab, (8th-12th)

Tutor: Katie Hietala

Prerequisite: Completed Algebra I

Description: This lab is an introductory general chemistry lab course that will complement the chemistry class. The students will work individually and in pairs to work through the 31 experiments aimed at enhancing concepts learned during class. This section will include measurements, using significant figures, calibrating thermometers & looking at effects of temperature on solubility, mass conservation, conductivity, working with household acids/bases & titrations, chemical reactions, etc. Students will learn to keep a good laboratory notebook of all experimental findings and thoughtfully write summary reports of what was learned. **This lab class is meant to complement the main chemistry lab class and should be taken together.**

Texts: Exploring Creation with Chemistry, 2nd Edition (can be purchased used on Amazon or we have a few that can be checked out for the year)

Homework: Students should be prepared for class each week and ready with notebook to perform lab work. Reading from the text that corresponds to lab experiments will be assigned as prep for each lab. Quizzes will be given each week to ensure preparedness. A syllabus and schedule will be provided to help facilitate work on non-class days.

Supply fee: A $35 one-time fee will be collected to cover the cost of copies, lab supplies, etc. A composition notebook (black and white) will be required. A calculator will be useful as well, especially for solving chemical equations. Semester payment is preferred (1st semester $140/2nd semester $175).
