For the longest time, I required my students to alternate between free choices, non-fiction, and classics. Therefore, I still generally follow the same reading pattern.
How do I choose?
Free Choices- I just go with something that I really want to read. Sometimes this might be a classic or a non-fiction. Mostly, however, I go with some fast-paced fictional story. I'm a softy for a good fantasy novel.
Classics- Honestly, just like my students, I want to be exposed to well-written literature...and a variety of it. So, I reference lists like this one.
Non-Fiction- As a default, I chose topics I am interested in studying--topics I like. I also enjoy reading biographies or autobiographies.
(Note: Since I am a high school teacher, my years rotate around that calendar, and my lists restart every June.)
