KEY OBJECTIVES: Classroom Expectations and Functions, Analytical Reading, and Formal Writing
Ok, it might not be life changing for all of you... but you never know!
Term 1 is really an ice breaking term. We'll establish classroom procedures and expectations, dive into text analysis, develop outlining and note-taking skills, and write our first essay (IRA 1). Though a lot the earlier weeks will feel stuck in the realm of course development, I look forward to hitting the ground running with actual learning within the first days. I will also try to always paint an extended picture of how the semester will develop. Try and use this for your own planning purposes. IF I somehow fail to do this, please know that this website is open to you as a launching pad for all the major activities we will be doing in class. I try and keep it as updated as possible, so feel free to explore!
Here's the basic assignment break down (Assignment names are live links to the assignment sheets):
1. Character Motivation Assessment (CMA): This is the "intro" project. You will be reflecting on one of the three stories we cover and turning it in to turnitin.com.
-Readings: Genesis 1-3, Yuba City School, Epic of Gilgamesh
2. IRA 1: The Independent Reading Assignment. This is a foretaste of things to come. You will write approximately six of these essays throughout the course of the school year. This is your first. Keep in mind that it is a reflection not a summary. Also, I recommend choosing your free choice as your first essay since the term is short and the assignment is new.
-References: Make sure and view my Writing 101 page, as well as the template. It wouldn't hurt to keep this writing scale in mind either.
In this term, we'll also be taking the SRI test (a reading level test) and a Benchmark Test (a ELA-skill level test). Neither of these will be for a grade, but are both for assessment purposes only. Likewise, we will take 1 Summative which will address the larger concepts of close reading and text analysis. All of our ELA II summatives will also include a 5-paragraph (minimum) essay.
If you have any questions, let me know.
Have a great day. Make wise decisions.
