Second Lecture Set for May 16th

Post date: Apr 23, 2012 5:57:33 PM

The North Topanga Canyon Fire Safe Council continues presenting its’ four-part lecture series designed to help us better understand and mitigate the risk of wildfire to our homes and in our canyon.

The second lecture: “Vulnerabilities of Buildings To Wildfire" focuses on the vulnerabilities of buildings to wildfire exposure and provides options to help your home survive when a wildfire threatens. These exposures include (1) burning embers, (2) direct flame contact, and (3) radiant heat. Burning embers are the most important cause of home ignitions. Learn what you can do to protect your home from a nationally recognized expert.

Wednesday May 16th from 7 - 9 pm at the Topanga Library Community Room

Stephen Quarles, Ph.D: Senior Scientist at the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety. Steve has spent over 25 years researching and speaking about wildfire protection for structures and how to improve their resilience from wildfires.

Living in Topanga means living with the threat of wildfire. Based on the history of wildfire in the Santa Monica Mountains, it’s not a matter of if wildfire will come to Topanga, but when. This reality has led to the creation and funding of the North Topanga Canyon Fire Safe Council (NTCFSC). With education, better planning and preventative action, we can mitigate the risks.
