While studying IT for the past 4 years, I have encountered many opinions that women shouldn't be part of this "male field". I have heard a billion times that it is weird that I am in this field since I'm a girl. I try not to dwell on these kinds of opinions because they are rather pre-historic and frankly I couldn't care less. But that doesn't mean that I can't appreciate when a woman achieves something big in this field and shows the haters what's up.
That is the reason why I chose Margaret Hamilton as my Old New Media Icon.
Margaret is an American mathematician and computer scientist born in 1936. She was the software engineer who wrote the code for the Apollo XI mission guidance computer. It was thanks to her that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were able to take a walk on the moon.
On the left you can see perhaps the most famous photo of Margaret Hamilton. She is standing next to listings of the Apollo Guidance Computer source code which she wrote.
She popularised the term "software engineering" and developed many concepts that became the foundation for ultra reliable software design. She is truly one of the pioneers of software engineering and computer science in general and a truly inspirational woman.
You can read more about her on her Wikipedia page.
