A project by Emily and Helena.
We set out to create a game in OpenFrameworks. The goal of the game is to fit yourself into the shape that is being projected on the wall. You can play the game by standing within the space that is projected. We chose to make this kind of game, because we like how it used a big space with very little means: you can make a game with your whole body, needing nothing more than a laptop (admittedly, one that has a webcam) and a projector.
How does it work?
We used a laptop with a webcam and projector to realize the project. The webcam continuously films the area in which images are being projected. The location of the person playing the game is detected by subtracting a background image from the incoming webcam data. The location of the person is compared to the location of the projected shape, which has in turn been detected by subtracting pixel values from an image without the shape from the pixels of an image with the shape. This way it can be determined whether or not the person is standing within the dark area of the shape. When a certain percentage of the game player's body is in this area, the next image will be projected.
