The hanging garden for MT is a quick exploration to introduce a small and friendly piece of green natural surface into the social and environmental spaces where a new generation of new media technologers is forming. Its vegetal spatial action is well known; it softens the space around, and brings some perceptual relief. In the social space it quickly creates links and attracts persons who want to get involved as casual gardeners.
We are looking at technologies as media to transform ourselves and our environment. And if technologies is transforming human beings into cyborgs, the same process can be seen in the environment. This is a big responsibility and we need to take it seriously. Environmental breakdown is a real risk, and we cannot let it happen. New media and new technologies raising powerful in recent decades will have a major impact on Earth ecosystem, and it is our responsibility to make it for good.
Agriculture is a powerful transformative medium that has, across cultures and generations, shaped our environment in several dimensions, including social and ecological. We can then see agriculture as one of first and most important tools to cyborgrize planet Earth. Gardening and agriculture (related like the two sides of the same coin) are still valid and powerful tools, and allow us to preserve and recreate nature in different degrees. This becomes radically important when human technological network is about to cover the complete surface of the planet and in doing so risking to flatten its nature.
There is a need to preserve and recreate a deep and somehow wild, escaping of total control, nature in the cyborg-earth. If we achieve that, nature will be a source for the cyborg-human, and cyborg-human and cyborg-earth will find a way for a fruitful integration.
