Non-Binary Gender

This page compliments our session for RSNA 2021

Understanding non-binary gender in patient care, education, and research

Many physicians refrain from talking about sexual orientation and gender identity or expression because it feels taboo or because they’re afraid of saying the wrong thing. LGBTQ people use a variety of terms to identify themselves. Non-LGBTQ people have limited understanding of the terminology or definition.

This could hamper the quality of patients care and inter-professional relationship among colleagues. Students with non-binary gender may not feel included or welcomed. Moreover, we, as physicians, need to understand the medical needs for those non-binary gender patients. We also need to develop sensitivity training among healthcare professionals for non-binary patients.

In this program, we will address the following:

1) Definition of non-binary gender

2) What physicians treating non-binary gender patients must understand

3) Teaching transgender health to medical students

4) Strategies to develop an inclusive working environment for non-binary patients

5) Q&A

Objectives:

To improve understanding of non-binary gender terminology

To address the medical needs for non-binary gender patients

To develop an inclusive organizational culture to welcome non-binary students and patients
