Le Fort Classification
The classification system attempts to distinguish Le Fort fractures according to the plane of injury.
- Type 1 - aka Guerin fracture and "floating palate"
- plane of fracture is horizontally oriented, extending to anterolateral nasal fossa
- involves nasal septum and medial and lateral walls of maxillary sinus
- separation of palate and maxillary alveolus from remainder of upper face and skull
- results from blow to upper lip area
- Type 2 - the most common type, aka pyramidal fracture
