Le Fort Classification

The classification system attempts to distinguish Le Fort fractures according to the plane of injury.

  • Type 1 - aka Guerin fracture and "floating palate"
    • plane of fracture is horizontally oriented, extending to anterolateral nasal fossa
    • involves nasal septum and medial and lateral walls of maxillary sinus
    • separation of palate and maxillary alveolus from remainder of upper face and skull
    • results from blow to upper lip area

  • Type 2 - the most common type, aka pyramidal fracture
