Released in January 1989 in the UK on the Rough Trade label, "Can't Be Sure" was the debut single by The SUNDAYS and the only single to be released from "Reading, Writing and Arithmetic". The single was voted number one in John Peel's Festive Fifty for 1989 and topped the indie charts for two months. The B-side was "I Kicked a Boy", which was later included on the album. The 12" single and 3" CD versions contained an additional exclusive track, "Don't Tell Your Mother".

Note, there is at least one misprint UK 7" release - it includes a misprinted label (showing Don't Tell our Mother) on the b-side.

"Can't Be Sure" was released as a proper single in other countries outside of the UK, but tends to be much more difficult to track down relative to the UK editions. One of the more cherished editions is the US Promo CD release. The US Promo CD was the only other way to get the rare "Don't Tell Your Mother" track on CD format, outside of the harder to find UK 3" CD version and the Japanese issued CD of "Reading" (which included the track as a bonus). The song was later (1994) officially released in the States via the Geffen compilation album DGC Rarities Volume 1.

Rough Trade also issued export only editions of the 7", 12" and 3" CD, which basically mirrored their UK counterparts (in look and sound), but identifiable through their brown/non-green tinted sleeves and X catalog numbers. These 'x-editions' seem to pop up mainly from European secondary markets, including Germany, France and Belgium and tend to be much more difficult to find versus their respective UK issues (particularly the 3" CD).
