Patch Hannan

There's not really much that can be added beyond what's already listed on Patch's discogs, myspace and bandWAGON pages.  But, if you didn't realize, Patch has kept very busy since (and during) his days with The SUNDAYS.  He's played with quite a few bands and artists over the years, much of which can be tracked down in various released format, mainly from the UK.  Not only has he continued to be a standout drummer, but he's extended his resume to include production/sound man/engineer.  A lot of which occurs at Blah Street Studios, a Hampshire residential studio (closed in 2002) built by brother Nick Hannan (Deep Season/Jim Jiminee).  This is in addition to forming his own tour management firm, bandWAGON.

This is by no means a complete listing but if you liked Patch's drum work on The SUNDAYS' releases, not sure why you wouldn't want to explore some of his other stuff.  A 'cliff notes' version to the discogs entries - all links go back to discogs.  A work in progress.

1992

Vinegar Blossom - Absence of Choice / Perfection Found In Good Health (A Turntable Friend)

This is a German label/release but a UK-based 90s indie band.  The contact address indicates Hampshire (Hants) as their base.  I don't know anything more except that Patch is credited as engineer: "With thanks to....Patch Hannan at Studio Poisson, Crondall".

1995

Homer - Lucky Thirteen (Platform Records)

Homer was Tim Keegan's band with Andrew Claridge, Jake Kyle and Patch.  Circa 1995-97.  Tracks 1 and 2 were recorded by Nick at Blah Street Studios.  Patch is credited for drums and backing vocals on...

1.  Lucky Thirteen

2.  Indestructible

3.  Single (Double Version)

1996

Bennet - Colossal Man (Roadrunner Records)

Released May 1996.  Bennet was a UK indie band from the 90s. All songs recorded at Blah Street Studios.  Nick is listed as engineer for track #1.  Patch is credited for producing and engineering...

2.   Big Fat Wife

3.   Club Foot Angel

4.   Motorbike

Robyn Hitchcock - Moss Elixir (Warner Bros.)

Released August 1996.  Best known from the late 70s band The Soft Boys, Robyn Hitchcock has gone on to a successful solo career since then.  Nick is credited for recording "Beautiful Queen" at Blah Street Studios.  Patch is credited on...

4.   Alright, Yeah (drums)

7.   Beautiful Queen (drums)

10. De Chirico Street (drums & tambourine)

1997

Robyn Hitchcock - Beautiful Queen - Royal Queen Albert & Beautiful Homer (Warner Bros.)

This seems a fairly rare US promo release.  Track 1 ("Beautiful Queen") is taken from the 1996 Moss Elixir album while tracks 2-12 are live tracks from Robyn's Borderline, London gig on May 25, 1996 with the band Homer - a tribute gig celebrating the long-bootlegged electric-half of the historic 1966 Bob Dylan concert.  Homer includes guitarists Andrew Claridge and Tim Keegan, bassist Jake Kyle and drummer Patch Hannan.

Bennet - Mum's Gone To Iceland (Roadrunner Records)

Released January 1997.  All songs recorded at Blah Street Studios.  Nick is credited as engineer for track 1 "Mum's Gone To Iceland".  Patch is credited for co-producing and co-engineering...

Various Artists - Seeds: The Poppy Sampler 1997 (Poppy Records)

Released September 1997, this is a sampler CD that includes Theaudience, the late 90s British indie band fronted by Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Billy Reeves. Patch is credited as being part of the band.  No further information.  Track 9, "How's That?", was written by Billy Reeves.

Theaudience - I Got The Wherewithal (Elleffe)

Released October 1997, this single was the band's official debut release.  Patch is prominent in the band photos.

1.   I Got The Wherewithal

2.   Je Suis Content

3.   Outside; Out Of Space

4.   Helen And Polly

Bennet - I Like Rock (Roadrunner Records)

Patch is credited as co-producer along with Julie Butcher at Blah Street Studios for track 2 "Air Hockey" and track 3 "Ocean".

Homer - There, There (The Money Pit Volume 4) (Blue Rose Records)

Patch is listed in the personnel credits.  This 7" is clear green vinyl and numbered on the rear sleeve.

1998

Theaudience - If You Can't Do It When You're Young; When Can You Do It? (Elleffe)

Released February 1998.  This was their second single.  Again, Patch is credited as being part of the band.  No further specifics.  Nick is credited for recording all songs at Blah Street Studios.

Arnold - Fleas Don't Fly (Creation Records)

Released April 1998.  Patch and Nick pitched in on a couple tracks for Arnold's second single for Creation.  For track #1 "Fleas Don't Fly" and track #3 "On The Bus", Patch gets the nod for drums while Nick gets credit for the engineer work at Blah Street Studios.

Theaudience - A Pessimist Is Never Disappointed (Elleffe)

Released May 1998, this is the band's third single.  This time in 2-CD single format.  I assume Patch is responsible for all the drums on this single (it is not specifically stated in the credits, but he is prominently photographed with the band in the inner/rear sleeve).  For CD1, Patch is specifically credited for producing track 2 "Penis Size and Cars".  Nick is credited for recording tracks 2-4 at Blah Street Studios.  For CD2, Nick is credited for engineer work for tracks 2-4, at Blah Street Studios.  Note that the 7" single contained an additional exclusive b-side.

Arnold - Hillside (Creation Records)

Released July 1998.  The Hannan brothers are prominent throughout.  Nick is credited as engineer on tracks 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 12 and co-engineer on track 8 - at Blah Street Studios.  Patch is credited on...

1.   Fleas Don't Fly (drums and "sings harmony")

2.   Ira Goes To North Country (drums)

6.   Windsor Park (drums)

10. Face (drums)

13. Moroccan Roll (Part Two) (drums)

14. Catherine Day (engineer at Blah Street Studios)

Theaudience - I Know Enough (I Don't Get Enough)  (Elleffe)

Released July 1998, this was their fourth and final single and again came in 2-CD format.  Each CD contains exclusive material.  Track #3 of CD2 "The Last Seven Minutes With You" is a Nick-recorded track.  Note that the 7" and 12" vinyl each contained exclusive material relative to the 2-CD release.

Theaudience - Theaudience (Mercury Records)

Released August 1998, this was their one and only album.  Again, I assume Patch is responsible for all drums.  Patch is also credited for producing/co-producing or engineering/co-engineering many of the tracks on the LP.  There was also a limited UK 2 CD version of this album that contains rare demos and alternative takes, including two Nick produced tracks.  Reissued on vinyl in 2022.

Tim Keegan & The Homer Lounge - Long Distance Information (Flydaddy Records)

Released October 1998.  I don't know what the initial connection was but Tim Keegan is Patch's pal/bandmate from Homer.  Patch doesn't have any connection to the Long Distance Information album (as far as I can tell from the inner sleeve info).  In fact, Lindsay Jamieson gets credit for drums and percussion on the album.  And a guest appearance by Robyn Hitchcock.  But, the CD album includes a bonus CD of a Homer EP, This Is Then, featuring three b-side tracks.  Patch is credited as being part of Homer (so, I assume all drum work).  Patch is also credited for having mixed track #1 "The Shallow End" at Blah Street Studios "down in Hampshire, late 1996".

Homer - Grow Your Own (Meek Giant)

I haven't been able to track this CD down yet but based on the discog notes, it seems a fairly rare release: "private press cd - reputedly only 200 in existence.  Collection of early acoustic songs compiled onto CD and sold through the Homer fan-club and at early Homer gigs."  Patch is credited for drums, percussion and backing vocals.

1999

Robyn Hitchcock - Jewels for Sophia (Warner Bros.)

For Robyn's 1999 album, Patch is credited for drumming on one track, #10 "No, I Don't Remember Guildford".

PmFf - Schadenfreude (Go Jerry) (Wildlife)

Released April 1999Patch is credited as a co-writer on track #2 "Hey 17 Am I Off My Head Again".

2002

Kimberley Rew - Great Central Revisited (Bongo Beat)

Released September 2002.  I'll assume the connection here is through Robyn Hitchcock.  Kimberley was/is a member of The Soft Boys from 1978-81.  Patch is credited for drums on...

2.   English Road

5.   EG Blues

7.   Philip Larkin

9.   Great Central Revisited

10. Heart of Things

11. June Barley

Robyn Hitchcock - Robyn Sings (Editions PAF!)

Released November 2002, this 2-disc album is a release of earlier live material from 1996-2000.  Patch fans will be most interested in disc 2 (Disc dots) which is essentially a re-release of the 1996 Borderline Dylan tribute gig that was made available via the Beautiful Queen US promo CD from Warner Bros. in 1997.  Except far easier to find and generally cheaper.  Patch plays the role of Mr. Jones (drums).  Note that three of the songs from the 1996 show are on disc 1 (Disc stripes).

くるり - The World Is Mine (Speedstar)

A J-pop band?  Released in 2002.  Patch is credited for drums on track #11 "Thank You My Girl".  Incidentally, Nick Hannan is credited for vocal/noises/sound on tracks #1 "Guilty", #6 "アマデウス" and #13 "Pearl River".

2003

Damian Wilson - Let's Start A Commune (Cosmas Records)

I'm not quite sure what the connection here is either.  Damian Wilson is probably best known for fronting the late 80s UK metal band Threshold. Patch is credited for drums and percussion on track #11 "Feels Good".  Nick is credited for co-producing for the track.

2004

Steeleye Span - The Official Bootleg (Park Records)

2023

Midlake - Live At Roundhouse (Bella Union)

As Tour Manager for the band, Patch is credited for recording the live show, released on vinyl for 2023 Record Store Day (April 22).
