Considering College - Things First Nations Students may Consider When Choosing a College
Students who have been out of school three or more years are strongly encouraged to write Mathematics and English Placement Exercises before registering in Math or English courses. We recommend that students who completed any of the following courses complete a Placement Exercise:

Bullying Resources
Students who experience bullying are encouraged to visit the Alberta Government website Bully Free Alberta . The Province of Alberta operates a toll-free line for support and advice for dealing with bullying. The help line, staffed by trained counsellors, is available 24 hours a day seven days a week. The toll-free number for Alberta residents is 1-888-456-2323.
Healthy Settings for Young People in Canada is a Public Health Canada online book covering numerous topics related to child and youth health. One chapter discusses bullying and fighting.
Community Resources
First Nation and Inuit Hope for Wellness Hotline. Distress 24/7 hotline for Indigenous Canadians. 1-855-242-3310.
Bully Free Alberta. Alberta Government toll-free line for support and advice for dealing with bullying has trained counsellors available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Toll-free number for Alberta residents 1-888-456-2323.
Child Intervention Services. Students who are abused or neglected, and individuals who believe a child is abused or neglected can call the Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-387-5437. The Hotline is toll-free inside Alberta.
Kids Help Phone . Help line for youth living in Canada. Trained counsellors are available online or by phone 24/7. The toll free number is 1-800-668-6868.
A physician provides medical care and can refer people to counselling services.
Hospital. Mental health counsellors work in some Alberta hospitals. Nurses, physicians, and counsellors know of local community agencies providing assistance.
Municipal police or RCMP. RCMP website has contact information for RCMP detachments.
PFLAG Canada . Resource for family and friends of sexual minority students.
The Support Network - has data base of agencies in Edmonton region. Offers walk-in counselling, youth crisis chat, caregiver support, and distress line. The distress line has an easy to remember telephone number: 482-HELP (482-4357).
Youth at Risk - information about supporting people at risk of suicide. Site has phone numbers Albertans can contact when in crisis. People in other Canadian regions can find crisis phone numbers for their area on the website.

Centre for World Indigenous Knowledge. Athabasca University's Centre for Indigenous Knowledge meets the academic needs of Indigenous students, scholars and nations, strengthens Athabasca University research for FMNI people, protects Indigenous knowledge and traditions, and acknowledges the role of traditional knowledge in academic settings.
Honouring Life. The Honouring Life Network offers resources for Aboriginal youth suicide prevention.

Institute of Advancement of Aboriginal Women. Through educational programs, the guidance of elders, the development and delivery of support services, the Institute promotes positive relationships and social justice for Aboriginal women. The institute gives Esquoa Awards to Aborignal women. Links to some IAAW videos with elders that are published on You Tube by the Institute appear below:
KASP stands for Keeping Alive Stories for the People. KASP helps build self-esteem in Aboriginal youth through music, performance and story telling.
Metis Employment Services. Metis Employment has programs that assist people in obtaining skills required for the labor market.
National Aboriginal Day. Indian and Northern Affairs Canada website about June 21, National Aboriginal Day.
Native Counselling Services of Alberta. This agency has programs for Aboriginal people who need courtworker assistance, family and community wellness, housing, residential school survivors, corrections and restorative justice and health promotion. The Native Counselling Services offers the Mother Bear Journey to Healing, a program designed to assist residential school survivors and their families.
Red Nation - The Native Hip-Hop Project. This popular Canadian music group draws from ther Aboriginal heritage when they create and perform music.

College, University and Post-Secondary Studies
Athabasca University. Alberta's distance learning university offers over 20 courses in indigenous studies.
Algoma University. Algoma has a B.A. degree program in Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe) and Indigenous studies.
Aurora College. Aurora offers an aboriginal culture and language program.
Banff Centre. The Centre offers aboriginal leadership and management programs in areas related to management, economic development, planning, effective relationships, governance, negotiation, and women in leadership.
Brock University. Brock students are able to complete a B.Ed. in Aborignal education, a B.Ed. in adult Aboriginal education, a certificate in Aboriginal language, and a Native teacher education program.
Centre for World Indigenous Knowledge. McMaster's University. McMaster's offers a 3-year general degree in indigenous studies.
Memorial University. Memorial has a minor in Aboriginal studies.
Nunavut Arctic College. The college offers a teacher education program, and an arctic nursing program.
Portage College. Portage offers programs in native arts and culture.
Queens University. The Department of Geology offers a master's degree with a concentration related to indigenous studies and the Faculty of Education has an Aboriginal teacher education program.
Red River College. Two-year programs in Aboriginal government and in Aboriginal languages are offered by Red River College.
Simon Fraser University. The Faculty of Education offers an M.Ed. in Indigenous Education.
Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. SAIT offers a 31 week long oil and gas land administration program for Aboriginal students. SAIT's Chinook Lodge Aboriginal Resource Centre provides culturally sensitive coaching and assistance for First Nation students.
St. Thomas University. An undergraduate major and minor in Aborignal studies is available at St. Thomas University.
Trent University. Trend has a Ph.D. program in indigenous studies.
University of Alberta. The Faculty of Native Studies offers an undergraduate degree in native studies, combined degree programs in native studies and education, and combined degree programs in native studies and environmental conservation.
University of British Columbia. At the University of British Columbia, students are able to complete degree programs in First Nation studies, First Nation languages, Native Indian teacher education and community and Aboriginal forestry. The faculty of medicine has an Aboriginal residency program.
University of Calgary. A 4-year B.A. in international indigenous studies is offered by the University of Calgary. The university's Native Centre offers culturally appropriate support to First Nation students.
University of Lethbridge. A B.A. in native American studies, a B.F.A. in Native American Art and combined degree programs in native American studies and education, and in native American studies and management are available at the University of Lethbridge.
University of Manitoba. The Department of Native Studies offers an undergraduate major and an M.A. in native studies. A Ph.D. program is under development.
University of Montana. The University of Montana has an Indians into Psychology program.
University of Northern British Columbia. Certificates in first nations community planning, health sciences, language, public administration, Metis studies, and traditional environmental knowledge are offered. A first nations focus is available in the B.S.W. and the bachelor of planning degree programs.
University of North Dakota. The University of North Dakota has a clinical program in psychology called Indians in Psychology Doctor of Education (INPSYDE).
University of Oklahoma. The University of Oklahoma offers an American Indians into Psychology program.
University of Regina. The University of Regina offers a Bachelor of Indian Social Work and a Master of Aboriginal Social Work.
University of Saskatchewan. Three and four year undergraduate degrees in Native Studies and an M.A. in Native Studies are offered by the University of Saskatchewan.
University of South Dakota. The University of South Dakota offers a four year degree in native studies and offers an Indians into Psychology Doctor of Education degree (INPSYDE).
University of Toronto. A bachelor's degree in Aboriginal studies is available at the University of Toronto.
University of Winnipeg. The University of Winnipeg offers three and four-year degree programs in indigenous studies.
Wilfrid Laurier University. Students completing the Master of Social Work degree at Laurier are able to specialize in Aboriginal studies.
York University. York's Osgoode Law School offers a program in Aboriginal lands, resources and government.
Yukon College. Programs are offered in native language instruction, heritage and culture, first nations governance, and Yukon native teacher education.
