Division With Decimals

Objective

Know how to divide numbers with many digits.

Example

18.2106 ÷ 2.01

1821.06 ÷ 201

Answer: 9.06

Explanation

Dividing with decimals is the same as dividing without, except for 3 extra things to watch for:

1.) The divisor can not have a decimal point in it. Not a problem, just move it to the right until it's after the units place so you can erase it. Then move the decimal point in the dividend the same number of times.

18.2106 ÷ 2.01

We can't have a decimal in the divisor , so we move it 2 places.

This means we must also move the decimal point in the dividend 2 places.

1821.06 ÷ 201. (Always erase decimal points with no digits after them)

1821.06 ÷ 201

Then just calculate as if the decimal wasn't there

2.) If there is a decimal point in the dividend you must put one directly above in the quotient.

9.06

201|1821.06

3.) If there is still a remainder after bringing down the last digit of the dividend, you must make more 0's to bring down.

• If you already have a decimal point in the dividend, just write another 0 and bring it down

• If you don't already have a decimal point, put one, then make a 0 to bring down

If you keep getting remainders, you can stop and round it. The question should tell you what place value to round to.

Divide. Round to the nearest hundredth.

10÷ 3

3.333

3|10.000

- 9

1 0

3.333 (round to nearest hundredth)

3.33

Example 1

6706 ÷ 0.7

6706. ÷ 0.7 (The dividend doesn't already have a decimal point. Put one after the units place)

67060. ÷ 7. (Add a 0 because there are no places after the decimal point in the dividend )

67060 ÷ 7 (Always erase decimal points with no digits after them)

Answer: 9580
