Stuart Rossiter led a very rough(!) introduction to complexity science and social simulation (though covering wider spheres of simulation as well). We looked at Brian Castellani's complexity science map/timeline (this version is interactive; click-0n the circles!), and drew up a diagram of relevant authors (see attached drawnDiagram.png image).
As discussed, the two central concentric circles are a bit misleading and would probably be better (re)drawn as separate circles. I also missed off an application area--- Artificial Life and Evolutionary/Theoretical Biology. Names here would be Langton ('founder' of ALife), Soton's own Seth Bullock and Jason Noble, Braitenburg (Braitenburg vehicles), Ray (Tierra model), Doyne Farmer, Robert May, Epstein & Axtell (Sugarscape).
I've redrawn everything 'properly' as a diagram, which is attached and includes a better breakdown of the central 'theory' elements (see socialSimInfoGraphic_SPR.png). Note (as it says on the diagram) that this is a very subjective assessment by myself! In particular, ABM work doesn't tend to reference the DEVS theory of modelling and simulation, though I think it should. (Chapters 1 and 2 of Zeigler et al.'s 'textbook' should be essential reading for any modeller IMO. Sterman's SD textbook also highlights how many of the ideas on complexity inherent in ABM-oriented social simulation are equally present in the operational research community.)
Papers for many of the names were included in last year's 'survey' of influential papers.
