Duncan Mortimer delivered a talk that had originally been intended for presentation at a meeting of his Infrastructure Transitions project. He introduced the area of "transition studies", which seeks to provide a framework for thinking about social transitions such as the move from horses to cars, or the switch from monarchies to democracies. This general and ambitious theoretical framework seems to offer something to those of us trying to build emergent models of social change.
