About
A Family favourite since the mid '70s , I think from the back of a macaroni pack. Its quick, cheap and filling, also VERY tasty. Macaroni and tuna seems to sound odd to those who haven't tasted this dish, but I can't think of anyone who didn't like it.
I've altered the amounts of ingredients a bit over the years so don't be scared to adjust to your taste.
Ingredients
Ingredients
To serve two
Macaroni, 200g
Onion, 1 Medium, finely chopped
Butter, 50g, or 2oz
Milk, 1Pint
Flour,1 Rounded Tablespoon
Tomato Puree, 100g
Salt, 1/2 teaspoon
English mustard powder, 1 rounded teaspoon (Was 1/2)
Tuna, 2X 185g tins, (Was 1, but less in a tin now, and costs more !)
*Optional
*Cheese,
*Golden breadcrumbs,
Method
Put the Macaroni on to boil,
Fry the onion in the butter until soft.
Add flour (As per a white sauce, fry the flour) milk, tomato puree, salt and mustard.
Whisk over moderate heat, Boil for one minute.
Stir in optional cheese (I don't use the cheese!)
Add Drained Tuna (Squeeze out most of the liquid with a fork while in the tin)
Warm a couple of minutes without boiling.
Serve
Just over half fill, three dishes with Macaroni and pour over the tuna sauce,
Sprinkle the top with the (*Optional) golden breadcrumbs (Nice)
Notes
The Tomato puree Should be added to make the dish red/pinkish, dont go to mad with it!
Any left-overs, dish up into a suitable container, cool and freeze, reheats in micro wave well.
