n Green screen is a way to super-impose one image over another one. The image in the forefront will have portions transparent so the back image can show through. This is done by videoing the foreground image in front of a green screen and erasing anything that contains that color. You can create these videos with a camera and software on a computer. We'll be using one of the green screen apps on the iPad, Green Screen by Do Ink. Check out the tutorial video to get an idea of what this looks like.
1. Learn the app by going through the sample project in the Gallery. Click on the word Tutorial at the top to get the steps and explanations. You may also find their online support page to be useful for a textual explanation. Watch one of these videos for a quick introduction.
2. Do Your Challenge: Once you are comfortable with the interface and capturing video in front of the green screen, create your own video using Green Screen by Do Ink with a narrator and images in the background. The app is in the Video and Animation folder on the iPad. (If you need some dialog for practice, check out the dialog cards.)
Think through what you want in your video before starting - the video, the narration, the images. It is easiest to have all your video and photos already in the Photo Stream on the iPad, but you can add images from Google Drive or Dropbox. When you click on Locations in the upper left of the import panel, you will see those options. While you can capture video in the apps itself, you may find it easier to use the Camera app to capture the video and import it into Green Screen. You also have access to Animation and Drawing by Do Ink if you want to add that feature.
If you want to challenge yourself even more, try Do Ink's Animation and Drawing app to create an animation to add into the video.
3. Create a Challenge: Create a challenge your level using green screen video that could be used in a makerspace.
4. Create a curricular tie-in: With your partner, develop a idea to suggest to teachers for using green screen videos tied to classroom curriculum. Include an objective, at least one relevant standard that could be included, a description of an activity, and considerations on it implementation (e.g., equipment needs, student skills, grouping, timeframe).
