My sister, Joanne and her husband was just out to New York to see a Montana Grizzly game. While they were out there they went to Ellis Island. I knew the year and the ship but I didn't know the date they arrived. She found out that it was the S.S. Pennsylvania for sure. The Pennsylvania left Hamburg 23 Jan 1904 and arrived at New York on 13 Feb 1904. A cold time of the year! And a few years before the Titanic at that!

She gave me a copy of the portion of the passenger list of the Hansen family. It listed Carsten as 45 years (farmer), Margaretha 44 years (wife), Anna 17 years old (servant), Johannes 15 years (laborer) Thomas 14 years (laborer), Frieda 9 years old, All able to read and write to this point, the remainder were listed as children and were not able to read and write. Emma 6 years old, Margaret 4 years old, and Hans 2 years old.

There is a column that asks whether your (sic) going to join a relative or friend and brother in law Peter Michaelson is listed of Tilden, Nebr. One son (Carsten) and three of Margaretha's brothers = Peter, John and Hans were in Nebraska. They had a family of 10, my Grandma said they had “a hired man and hired girl who came with us from Germany. An Grandma Hansen stayed with us a while too.”

Quote about the Pennsylvania:

The Pennsylvania was built by Harlan & Wolff Limited, Belfast, Northern Ireland, 1897. 12,891 gross tons; 579 (bp) feet long; 62 feet wide Steam quadruple expansion engines, twin screw. Service speed 13 knots. 2,724 passengers (162 first class, 180 second class, 2,382 third class).

Ship History:
