Hadis of Pen and Paper

G Kumar: Briefly the story is as follows:

The Companions were meeting in the Messenger's house, three days before he died. He ordered them to bring him a bone and an ink pot so that he could write a statement for them which would prevent them from straying from the right path, but the Companions differed among themselves, and some of them disobeyed the Prophet and accused him of talking nonsense. The Messenger of Allah became very angry and ordered them out of his house without issuing any statement.

This is the story in some details:

Ibn Abbas said: Thursday, and what a Thursday that was! The Messenger's pain became very severe, and he said, "Come here, I will write you a document which will prevent you from straying from the right path." But Umar said that the Prophet was under the spell

Ibn Abbas said: Thursday, and what a Thursday that was! The Messenger's pain became very severe, and he said, "Come here, I will write you a document which will prevent you from straying from the right path." But Umar said that the Prophet was under the spell of the pain, and that they had the Qur'an which was sufficient being the Book of Allah. Ahl al-Bayt then differed and quarrelled amongst themselves, some of them agreeing with what the Prophet said, while others supported Umar's view. When the debate became heated and the noise became louder, the Messenger of Allah said to them, "Leave me alone."

Ibn Abbas said: The disaster was that the disagreement among the Companions prevented the Messenger from writing that document for them [5].

The incident is correct and there is no doubt

how could umar say Quran was enough

How did he say prophet was talking nonsense

Hizyaan is the word

and then say that Quran was sufficient

In reply to this first see this very hadis ...

NOTE 1: this text is written in 3rd person , i.e not word to word and it kind of gives a summary of what had happened ..

For such a case we should actually be seeing hadis word to word and in CONTEXT

lets see this further

...but the Companions differed among themselves, and some of them disobeyed the Prophet and accused him of talking nonsense.

here the person who writes this is Actyally saying some companions were DISOBEDIENT AND GUSTAKH (Accusation on prophet peace be upon him !!!!)

So its is for Sure that any body who would witness DISOBEDIENCE AND INSULT to prophet peace be upon him would not remain a MUSLIM .. so this writer(translator) believes they were not muslims

if i am a JUDGE I can say THAT MAN SHOULD be HANGED ..

if i am a lawyer I would say he KILLED an innocent person for his own selfish need and pleasure - BOTH (Action and Judgement )in legal terms mean THAT MAN DESERVES a DEATH PENALTY

and THIS IS A SHIA ONLY belief which says COMPANIONS were kafir

NOTE 2 : When pen and paper was asked this hadis says " ....right path, but the Companions differed among themselves "

WHAT was there to Disagree on this in first place?

there has to be some reason for disagreement , these companions were COMPANIONS during batt;es with least weapons and people and WORST of times

why would they differ when asked for PEN AND PAPER ?

IF YOU ASK SHIA : they would say it was because Maula Alis Khilafat was to be declared ....

since you are not the one i wont go into answering like i would do for a shia

as the essence of your question was more into DISOBEDIENCE AND INSULT rather than khilafat

The way this hadis is presented it also means :

SOME IMPORTANT MESSAGE WHICH WAS A PART OF ISLAM WAS NOT DELIVERED

THIS would also mean that

SOME non Prophet overpowered Prophet peace be upon him During his LAST TIME and DID not let his Message to be delivered - MAAZALLAH

now Looking from SHIA lenses , since this objection is raised by them or the seed of Doubt is sowed by them

there Has to be an EXPLANATION of FACTS as to WHY MAULA ALI- SHER E KHUDA was quiet looking at this incident

why all companions were quiet and submissive to Aggression of Some person

WHY MAULA ALI DID BAITH to such a person and stayed as his Advisor

WHY did he Marry his Daughter to hazrat e Umer e farooque raziallhutaalnhu During the his Khilafat ..

what i will give now is Ahle Sunnats presentation of this same incident then you can decide based on your wisdom and tally it with all the facts

Overview from Ahle Sunnats prepective :

The Prophet’s(peace be upon him ) last illness before his final departure from this world lasted around two weeks. During this time, the Prophet’s(peace be upon him ) condition gradually deteriorated and he became bedridden. He experienced a high grade fever, severe headaches, and even fainting spells, slipping into and out of consciousness. The so-called “incident of the pen and paper” occurred four days before the Prophet’s death, on a Thursday.

The Prophet(peace be upon him ) asked for a pen and paper in order to write down some religious advice for the Muslims. However, immediately after asking for the pen and paper, the Prophet fainted and became unconscious. While the Prophet lay unconscious, a man got up to get the pen and paper, but Umar ibn al-Khattab raziallhutalanhu called him away from doing that. Umar raziallhutalanhu felt that they should not bother the Prophet by asking him to write down religious advice, but rather they should allow the Prophet to regain consciousness, get some rest, and recuperate. Therefore, Umar raziallhutalanhu said to the other Muslims: “The Prophet is seriously ill and you have the Quran; so the Book of Allah is enough for us.

And why did he say THAT ?

because before this incident it was QURAN which was revealed and said DEEN IS COMPLETE - can anybody deny that ayat

Umar ibn al-Khattab thought–and rightfully so–that the request for a pen and paper no longer applied now that the Prophet had fainted. Instead of getting the pen and paper, Umar raziallhutalanhu felt that they should allow the Prophet to rest. However, some of the Sahabah felt that they should get the pen and paper anyways, and that they should implore the Prophet to write for them; these people said: “Bring him (the writing material) so that Allah’s Messenger may write a document for you and you would never go astray after him.”

Some of the Sahabah felt that they should let the Prophet rest and ask him for religious advice later; others felt that they should have the Prophet write immediately after he came back to consciousness.

This led to a dispute amongst the Sahabah, and they began arguing loudly.

It was then that the Prophet awoke from his state of unconsciousness, amid loud noises and great clamor. The Prophet had a splitting headache, so this racket upset him greatly. It was due to this loud bickering that the Prophet told those in the room to “go away” and to leave him alone.

Regarding Disobedience

When the Prophet asked Maula Ali (may Allah be well-pleased with him) to erase something during the Treaty of Hudaybiyya, Maula Ali refused to do so .

here hazrat Umar razuallhutaanhu did not dispute with the Prophet: when Umar said what he said, the Prophet was actually unconscious.

AND THAT WAS DUE TO THE FACT THAT THEY HAD BEEN HIS COMPANIONS FOR YEARS AND KNEW HIM and KNEW ISLAM AS WELL it was love of BOTH of THEM which lead to refusal

some references of this from SHIA source

Shaykh Mufid, the classical Shia scholar of the tenth century, writes:

He (the Prophet) fainted from the fatigue which had come upon him and the sorrow which possessed him.

He remained unconscious for a short time while the Muslims wept and his wives and the women and the children of the Muslims and all of those present raised great cries of lamentation. The Apostle of Allah recovered consciousness and looked at them. Then he said: “Bring me ink and parchment so that I may write for you, after which you will never go astray.”

Again he fainted and one of those present rose to look for ink and parchment.

“Go back,” Umar ordered him.

(Kitab Al-Irshad, by Shaykh Mufid, p.130)

IF SOME ONE CLOSE TO US IS IN THIS STATE and specially those who had many times presented them selves to sacrifice their lives for him .. would they not be concerned for the prophet peace be upon him - they KNEW DEEN WAS COMPLETE

The Shia propagandists claim that hazrat Umar Raziallhutalanhu said that the Prophet (peace be upon him )was talking nonsense or that he asked if the Prophet (peace be upon him )was delirious.

Yet, this is a blatant and manifest lie! In absolutely no Hadith did Umar ibn al-Khattab raziallhutalanhu say these words. The event is narrated in multiple Hadith, including in

Sahih Bukhari (4.52.288, 5.59.716, 4.53.393, 7.70.573, 1.3.114) and

Sahih Muslim (13.4014, 13.4015, 13.4016).

Yet, not in a single version–neither in the Sahihayn nor in any other Hadith compilation for that matter–are any such words ascribed to Umar ibn al-Khattab raziallhutalanhu.

The words “is he delirious” appear in Sahih Bukhari, as follows:

…The ailment of Allah’s Apostle became worse (on Thursday) and he said, “Fetch me something so that I may write to you something after which you will never go astray.” The people (present there) differed in this matter, and it was not right to differ before a prophet. Some said, “What is wrong with him? (Do you think) he is delirious (seriously ill)? Ask him (to understand his state).”

(Sahih Bukhari, Volume 5, Book 59, Number 716)

In the above narration, someone asked “is he delirious?” By this, he meant “is he in a state of altered consciousness?” In Sahih Muslim, we read:

The illness of Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) took a serious turn (on Thursday), and he said: “Come to me, so that I should write for you a document that you may not go astray after me.” They (the Companions around him) disputed, and it is not right to dispute in the presence of the Apostle. They said: “How is (Allah’s Apostle)? Has he lost his consciousness? Try to learn from him (this point).”

(Sahih Muslim, Book 013, Number 4014)

…He (the narrator) said that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: “Bring me a shoulder blade and ink-pot (or tablet and ink pot), so that I write for you a document (by following which) you would never go astray.” They said: “Allah’s Messenger (may peace upon him) is in the state of unconsciousness.”

(Sahih Muslim, Book 013, Number 4015)

The man who asked this question was simply wondering if the Prophet was conscious or not. He did not mean to imply any disrespect.

Ibn Abbas said himself:

The people (present there) differed in this matter, and it was not right to differ before a prophet.

(Sahih Bukhari, Volume 5, Book 59, Number 716)

So here HE IS REFERRING TO THE FACT THAT PEOPLE WERE Differing in fornt of prophet which is not right

WHAT A SHOCKING THING : why is he not saying that we missed some information from quran instead was worried that they could be better composed that time !!!

But the companions of the Prophet differed about this and there was a hue and cry. On that the Prophet said to them, “Go away (and leave me alone). It is not right that you should quarrel in front of me.” Ibn Abbas came out saying, “It was most unfortunate (a great disaster) that Allah’s Apostle was prevented from writing that statement for them because of their disagreement and noise.”

(Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 3, Number 114)

If the Prophet peace be upon him was really going to write a will appointing Ali as his successor or anything new , then why didn’t the Prophet peace be upon do that before his death and going behind viels ?

The event of the pen and paper happened on a Thursday, whereas the Prophet died on a Monday.

read this reply and Compare it with the facts which were stated before the start of the answer

Surah al Maidah verse 92 “Obey Allah and Obey his Prophet and worry, and be warned that the Prophet’s duty is only to deliver the message clearly

SO read and decide was the prophet peace be upon him clear in his message and was it delivered ?
