Black is not the color of Muharram, Green is
Our Prophet, Maula Ali and Imam Jafar - e - Sadiq, has strictly prohibited wearing Black Color (Both cloth and shoes)
"Dont wear Black" its the color of Shaitan - said the prophet peace be upon him (See bihar al anwar)
"Dont wear Black" Pharoah wore black cloths - Said Imam ALi (See Nehej al Israr, Tehzeeb al Islam )
Historically speaking The use of Black color started in Iran during the month of Muharram, by Banu Abbas
Please Read "Bihar ul Anwar'', "Nehj ul Israr", "Tehzeeb Ul Islam", even the most referenced book "Tohfat ul Awam" (written by 4 Marjas)
Historically speaking people used to wear blue for mourning purpose- you can find this sentence under the following website
"Dressing in black is an obligation and the close relatives will follow this dress code for 40 days and sometimes even for a whole year. Historical evidence indicates that till 11th century white and blue were still commonly used as mourning colors"

One of the advocators against the color black, is Imam Jafar e sadiq, who should have mentioned something about Karbala also for instance, "wear black when you are in mourning", otherwise not".
In reality, he said dont wear black, because black is the color of devil (Shaitan)
I am not quoting this out of thin air, but all these are clearly mentioned in books coming from Iran, written by Irani Marjas
("Behar al Anwar, Tehzeeb ul Islam, Nehj al Israr, Tuhfat al Awam", etc, etc)
Read Ayatollah Sistani "Tauzeeh", and it is clearly mentioned, that you are not allowed to offer salat wearing Black.
What does that tell you, atleast follow your Imam (sistani)

Black was the favourite colour of Banu abbas, please read the following excerpts
According to Yakubi it was on the 27th of Ramadan, in the year 201 Hijri that the Imam was officially designated as Mamounss heir- apparent,( Waliahd,) and the Imams name was included with his own on gold and silver coins. The inscription on these coins is well worthy of notice: The King of God and the faith, Al-Mamoun, Amir and Khalifa of the faithful, and Al-Reza, the Imam of the muslims. This meant more than that the Imam was to be official chaplain to him for Mamoun summoned the descendants of Abbas, men and women to come to Merv. It was an assembly of thirty three thousand and when they all assembled, the caliph Mamoun called for Ali al- Reza as.gif and gave him a place of honour among the greatest of the Abbasid nobles. He then announced to those he had summoned, that he had carefully considered all the descendants of Abbas and also the descendants of Ali, and that he had not found in his search anyone more worthy or more fit to be his successor than Ali al- Reza. He therefore took him by the hand and publicly acknowledged him as his successor(Kulaini). He then gave his daughter Umme Habib in marriage. He also sent abroad the command that the wearing of black flags which was the symbol of Abbasid rule after the destruction of the Ummayads, should be discontinued and that hereafter the use of green should be substituted. Green being the colour of Ahlulbayt and the House of Ali as.gif was the order of the day.
