What do jewelers do? They create historical jewelry and beadwork to advance the art of historical jewelry making and understanding, including the documentation, technology and techniques involved.
Lapidary work involves the cutting of stones. These are most commonly cut for the purpose jewelry, though this is not always the case.
"Modern minerology is very different from Medieval lapidary, particularly because stones that could not separated in the Middle Ages can now be distinguished by their chemical composition. In addition, we distinguish fossils from minerals, and they did not." See Stefan's Florilegium for an excellent list of medieval stones. http://www.florilegium.org/?http%3A//www.florilegium.org/files/CRAFTS/A-Lapidary-art.html
Working with beads is another area that ties into jewelry making. Lampwork beads are created by hand with a torch from glass.
