Some questions you might have:
What does your group do? What are meetings? What goes on there? Do I need to pay or be a member?
The answers to these are pretty simple! You do not have to be a member, or pay anything, to come by and attend a meeting. We get together and do one of 5 things, every Tuesday of the month (and these are on the calendar, which you should check, just in case of any changes):
- Business meeting, always the first meeting of the month. These can either be boring for totally new members (just as a forewarning for those that may not want this to be their first meeting), or for some it can actually be interesting if you're new and want to hear what the officers of the group are talking about, to see what's currently going on in the Barony. At any rate, for the most part, the current officers talk and discuss the group's business for the month.
- Class night, where someone will be teaching a different topic each time, which you'll find on our online calendar.
- Project night -- Bring any project you're working on, to work on or show to others, if there is no specific Baronial-need project announced. Check the Facebook group or this is typically announced at the Business/planning meeting.
- Dance night.
- If there's a 5th Tuesday in the month, it's a social night, and members are encouraged to wear garb in order to bring the medieval atmosphere! And, we will bring snacks.
You can view the website to see what is currently planned for each quarter. https://ironmountain.meridies.org/meetings/
You do not need to worry about showing up in costume when you are new, because we know that you don't have any yet! And not everyone has a chance to change in the evenings so not all regulars will be garbed anyway. Just come as you are.
Business meetings -- the officers of the group will discuss what is currently going on in their office in relation to the group, etc. Some people say that this is a boring first meeting to come to, although you can also learn about how the structure works, so do not let that hold you back if you want to come and listen to business!!! It is certainly not for members or even Officers only. While it is a time that the Officers need to discuss the business, the benefit of this is for all members of the group.
Project nights -- a time to socialize, and if you have an SCA project you're working on, you can bring it and spend your hour and a half doing it there. If you have things to discuss with other group members, this is a great night to bounce ideas off of people, ask and learn things, or whatever sort of project your heart might desire.
Class night -- come and learn something! The learning and teaching of medieval knowledge is one of the things which helps to keep the SCA a non-profit organization. Come out and learn something interesting and new. Events aren't the only place you can take classes!
Dance night -- practice the dances of the Medieval times. If you go to an event, and stay until after the feast for the ball, you can even make your moves with other attendees. Or just sit and watch. But you are sure to have fun so don't be shy to give it a try!
On 5th Tuesdays, we will be having a social evening where members arrive garbed and also bring some goodies to eat. This is a great time to invite a friend to tag along and get to know the group!
