Welcome!

***Please note: these pages are a Chatelaine's personal notebook to any potential new members or visitors to the SCA, or even current members, but the pages are not an official part of the Baronial or SCA website.***

If you're here, you probably already have an idea of what the SCA is all about, are from the Kingdom of Meridies, and perhaps you're already familiar with my local group here in Birmingham, Alabama - the Barony of Iron Mountain. If you've arrived at these pages but are not nearby, perhaps you can find another group near you? SCA Groups in Alabama See also, the Newcomers SCA Portal!

I hope to share information with you here to help guide you through the many pages and sites you'll come across. Consider this information to be a guideline to help you find your way online. Of course, you can always ask me (in person or online) if you have any questions at all. Find me on Facebook or at my website thewillowford.com.

Other members of the group will be happy to help you too, of course! So don't feel shy to ask questions. This applies to all areas of the SCA. None of us are strangers, but rather just friends you haven't met yet. We have all started off as a beginner in the beginning after all :) So always feel welcome to walk up to other members and ask if they might explain what's going on there. We enjoy sharing our passions with our SCA friends!

Where to become a member http://sca.org/members/index.html

Do you have to become a member? No, you don't, ever, if you don't want to. You can always come to our meetings, local fighter practices, demos, etc., and even attend SCA events as a non-member. But, there are certain things that only members can do, such as hold office, fight for certain titles, register names and devices, and have a discounted price for events. So there are certainly benefits to membership!

How can you find out what's going on locally with the SCA group?

I have a local newsletter which lets you know about upcoming events and other items of interest. You may join the Facebook Group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/193574280766733/ or subscribe to the email list through Yahoo http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ironmtnchatelaine/

You can also read the Iron Baron online - that's our group's monthly newsletter! Get it at the website: https://ironmountain.meridies.org/historical-archives/

Or drop by a business meeting to receive a paper copy :)

Where can you read more about what the SCA is all about? First of all -- here is the place for newcomers to start at the SCA.org website: http://socsen.sca.org/society-chatelaine/newcomer-resources-and-information/

As well as the Kingdom's page: http://kingdom.meridies.org/index.php/offices/chatelaine

If there are specific topics within the SCA that interest you, you can probably find a dedicated discussion group about them on Yahoo and/or on Facebook. Although this is not an "official" directory, this link has been kept up to date with tons of links to SCA-related Facebook groups! https://www.facebook.com/groups/scadiscussiongroup/doc/10150718194786242/

You may find that many of those areas are Guilds; their links and other helpful links are here on the Kingdom website. http://kingdom.meridies.org/index.php/groups/guilds

You can also search to find some of them on Facebook. I have links to many of those on the page about each activity over on the left....

Also, come out to Fighter Practice on Sunday! Fighter Practice. Nope, it's not just for fighters. Come out and support the group, bring a project, or just chat and watch. The fighters also practice on alternate nights sometimes; see the Facebook group for those more spur-of-the-moment locations/time opportunities. http://www.facebook.com/groups/118662808163739/
