Research project draft works cited and literature review
Assignment:
Now that you have a research question, do a review of the literature and write a works cited page.
(1) Find at least one article or book that uses the same method that you will use. For example, if you are going to do a survey, find an article that uses the survey method. The other sources do not have to use the same method you use. Another should be an academic source; for example, from an academic journal or written by a PhD whose audience is mostly other academics. Cite at least two sources. here is a link to a list of sociological journals: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sociology_journals.
(2) For at least two of your sources, answer the following questions (this section is separate from the literature review):
1. What are the guiding research questions?
2. What are the research methods and the data?
3. What is the sample?
4. What are the findings?
5. What are the larger implications of this study?
Example answers for the following article:
This article examines health care utilization among injection drug users. Based on previous health care models, we identify various attitudes and personal characteristics that have been found to affect health care utilization in the general population, and we examine their effect with this at-risk group. They include trust in physicians, self-esteem, self-efficacy, social isolation, and depression. We examined survey data collected from 374 injection drug users in New Haven, Connecticut. Our findings indicated that trust in physicians significantly increased health care utilization, and depression decreased it. We also found that HIV+ respondents as well as those with health insurance utilized health care more often. These findings broaden the generalizability of existing health care utilization models, and they inform efforts to increase health care among vulnerable populations such as injection drug users. (Ostertag et al., 2006)
1. What are the guiding research questions?
What effects do attitude and personal characteristics (such as trust in physicians, self-esteem, self-efficacy, social isolation, and depression) have on the health care use of injection drug users?
2. What are the research methods and the data?
Survey data
3. What is the sample?
4 – 374 injection drug users in New Haven, Connecticut
4. What are the findings?
Trust in physician increases the health care use of active injection drug users. However, depression reduces the health care use of active injection drug users.
5. What are the larger implications of this study?
The study helps us figure out how to better serve vulnerable populations such as active drug users by identifying certain factors that affect their health care use. Better serving this population speaks to the overall public health of a community.

(3) Write a draft literature review section. In this section, you will summarize relevant previous research and talk about how your research adds to what is already known. Write at least one paragraph each for at least two of your sources. Discuss how sources relate to your research question and method. Since you have not conducted your research yet, you will have to guess a bit and revise later.
(4) Write a draft works cited page. Use any format you want for the works cited page, APA, MLA, or other. Here is a link to a resource guide on how to appropriately format the works cited section and in-text citations using the ASA format: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/583/1/, https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/583/03/ and, https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/583/02/
(5) If after doing the literature review, your research question and method has changed, note that as well.
Due date:
Due the day of the second midterm by midnight.
How to turn in:
Turn in a copy to Canvas on the day we take midterm 2.
Point value:
The draft literature review and works cited page is worth 20 points. Your revised research proposal is not graded.
Considerations:
We will discuss this topic in class and you are encouraged to talk about this topic with your classmates outside of class. You can even read each other’s papers. However, simply copying and editing another person’s paper is considered plagiarism and you will, at a minimum, get a zero on this assignment. Canvas is very good at catching plagiarizers. Please do not attempt.
Resubmission policy:
Any assignment that receives a score of 19 or less can be revised and resubmitted. There is a section on Canvas where you can turn in a resubmission. You will have until the next exam to resubmit.
Grading rubric:
1. Cites at least two sources (one that uses the same method you will use, one that is academic -- could be the same article)
2. Answers the five questions in section 2 for at least two sources (this section is separate from the literature review)
3. Draft literature review is at least two paragraphs (at least one paragraph each for at least two sources)
4. Shows how sources relate to their research
5. If research project has changed due to doing literature review, the change has been discussed (this part is not graded)
