Spring 2015

Activity Assignment 3

Due date: The day of the third midterm

How to turn in: Fill out the table, answer the questions and turn in a copy to Turnitin.com the day we take midterm 3.

Point value: This activity is worth 20 points.

Considerations: We will discuss this topic in class and you are encouraged to talk about this topic with your classmates outside of class. You can even read each other’s papers. However, simply copying and editing another person’s paper is considered plagiarism and you will, at a minimum, get a zero on this assignment. Turnitin.com is very good at catching plagiarizers. Please do not attempt.

Resubmission policy: Any paper that receives a score of less than 19 (93%) can be revised and resubmitted. However, the resubmit option can only be used once. And the maximum score possible for a paper that is resubmitted is 19. There is a section on Turnitin.com where you can turn in a resubmission. You will have until the next exam to resubmit. No late resubmissions will be accepted.

Here is a printable version of the worksheet below: http://1drv.ms/1Nd7M0Y

"What race are you?" Worksheet

Directions: In filling out the chart, students will explore the social construction of race. In order to complete this activity, students will download the free “Who Am I? Racial Awareness Game” app to their iPhone or iPad. It is found in the App Store. Then they will play the game with a partner. They will ask their partner how they think the person in the picture responded to the question: “What race are you?” If they do not have an iPhone or iPad, they can look through the screenshots provided at: http://1drv.ms/1xqv5Nw. They will then complete the worksheet handed out in class. Afterward, students will complete the questions below.

Estimated time for completion: 20 minutes

Key Concepts: race, ethnicity, stereotypes, social construction of race

Answer the questions below. Write down your answers or discuss with a partner/group.

1. What were the various “races” mentioned by the people pictured? Would you consider the races they claim to be as actual races? Why or why not? Why do you think they identify that way?

2. Explain how you came up with your guess for how the people pictured racially identified? What assumptions, stereotypes, and biases might have influenced your guess?

3. What race or races do you identify with, and why? Do you think that app users looking at your photograph would correctly identify your self-perceived racial identity? Why or why not?

4. Is it possible to determine one’s racial identity based on his or her physical features? Do you think race is natural and biological or a result of complex historical and cultural constructions?
