How nature constructs various structures by sandy materials

H. Katsuragi, ASim2014--The 2nd Asia Conference on International Building Performance Simulation Association--,November 28 - 29, 2014,Nagoya University, Nagoya, Japan.

Abstract: Our environment consists of a lot of granular materials such as beach sand, cement, rice, medicines, etc. The behaviors of these granular materials are partially similar to solids or fluids. However, much more complex properties can be frequently observed in granular behaviors. The proper understanding of granular materials is a necessary key to solve various science and engineering problems. In this talk, I will present a brief introduction to the physics of granular matter. Particularly, various counterintuitive phenomena concerning granular physics will be introduced. Although most of the topics dealt with in this talk are originated from the geophysics-related problems, some of them might relate to fundamental processes of constructions or crowd flow dynamics. Actually, the granular phenomena link to the wide range of science and engineering. I would like to show the state-of-the-art of such universal element, granular matter.
