The most famous 4 Daagse is The Walk Of The World, the 4 Daagse van Nijmegen. Besides this 4 Daagse there are many more 4 Daagse in The Netherlands to hike all year long and a few in the foreign. In this blog post, I will share my experience with hiking two 4 Daagse abroad, the 4 Daagse van Marbella and the 4 Daagse van Girona.
The 4 Daagse van Marbella takes place in October in Marbella, Spain. I participated in this event in 2019. I hiked all the four days, about 20 km. Each day, the hike took me through the city to a different part of the Marbella region. It's a great way to explore the Marbella region.
The 4 Daagse van Girona takes place in November in Girona, Spain. I participated in this event in 2025. I hiked 3 of the 4 days, the first day about 25 km and the other two days about 20 km. Each day, the hike took me through a different part of the region of Girona. It's a great way to see the region of Girona. I hiked only 3 of the 4 days due to bad weather condition on the second day. It wasn't responsible to hike in the storm.
In Marbella, I bought a package that included almost everything. This was a heavenly luxury, because I hardly had to worry about anything other than walking. For Girona, I chose to book everything separately. An advantage of this was that I could pay for everything separately instead of all at once. The accommodations in both cities were comparable in terms of comfort. In Marbella, there was also a swimming pool, a garden, and an all-day dining restaurant. In Girona, I stayed in the city center, which was convenient because everything was within walking distance. In Marbella, I had to take the local bus to the starting point and other sights and activities in the city.
In Marbella, food was included in the package, which meant I could eat at the hotel restaurant three times a day. I only had to buy food and beverage for the hikes. Water is something that has to be bought almost everywhere in Spain, as the water quality isn't comparable to that in The Netherlands. During the 4 Daagse van Girona, breakfast was included in the hotel price and lunch was included in the 4 Daagse van Girona price. This meant I could do my grocery shopping at the supermarket for dinner. Although this was okay, because a supermarket was nearby. I prefer the luxery of all-inclusive when hiking abroad, as I explained in the blog post: 'All-inclusive'.
Both events are organized by Dutch people. Both the 4 Daagse are well organized. The 4 Daagse van Marbella is a large event, while the 4 Daagse van Girona is a very small one. Both have their Charms and advantages. At the Marbella event, the hikers and their entourage could party after the hike at the finish. I took my bus on all four days back to my hotel before the party started. In Girona, some hikers went into the center after the hike. I opted to stay in my hotel and rest with dinner bought at the supermarket.
It was wonderful to hike through Girona and Marbella regions. All the hikes on all days of both events were well marked and took me to different parts of the region surrounding the cities over each of the four days. In Marbella this meant hiking in the mountains and along the beach. In Girona, this meant much of the hike was unpaved, a relief for my feet. The hikes took me to parts of the region I would not have seen if I had only visited Marbella and Girona as a tourist.
In both cities, the weather was better than the Dutch weather option in October and November. In Marbella, this meant starting the hike with a jacket on, which was later taken off due to the heat. IIt was so hot during the day that water was scarce in the hotel. During the day, water ran from the tap and was available for showering, but at night, the water supply was cut off for everyone after a certain hour. It's a bit cooler in Girona than in Marbella, but you can still get your vitamin D from the sun; read the blog post 'Zon Op Recept'.
There's plenty to do in both Marbella and Girona, both in the city and the surrounding area. In 2019, I chose to stay a few days longer in Marbella than the 4 Daagse van Marbella took to hike the Caminito del Rey, read the blog 'Caminito Del Rey', and visit Puerto Banús. In 2025 in Girona, I also chose to stay longer than the 4 Daagse van Girona took to see more of the city. I didn't venture outside Girona, but Barcelona would have also been an option if I hadn't already been there a few times. I visited the cathedral and museums in Girona and strolled through the Jewish Quarter and the old town.
