I saw in the news that a group of protesters were attacking a cruise ship trying to get to Amsterdam, because they think it is not okay to travel with a cruise because of the climate. I do not agree with their action. I think people should be free in what they choose to act on to save the planet.
I went on two cruises through the Caribbean in my life. It is the best way to see the Caribbean. The other way to see the Caribbean is to fly from island to island. In my opinion cruising is then the most friendly way to travel. Embarking and going of the cruise ship is the most time consuming, especially if starting at a USA port like I did twice.
Cruising is different from other holidays because most of the time I am at sea and can't go anywhere else except when the cruise is in a port. Further cruising is comparable to an all-inclusive hotel. All entertainment, food and beverage is on board almost 24 hours of the day. I can be entertainment all day from breakfast till sleep time. Even during meals the cruise tourist is being entertained. Two nights I had to dress up otherwise I had to dine with pizza or another snack.
On the two cruises I was on there were one or two days at sea. I spent it reading, walking around the cruise ship, playing cards, going to theater and looking out of the window. I was lucky to pass by an volcano eruption on Montserrat and seeing dolphins swimming around the cruise ship. The ship had to divert a bit, because of the volcano, but it could be seen from the decks and the windows. As far as I know nobody had been in real danger during the eruption on the island of Montserrat.
On most of the days the cruise stopped at a port and the cruise tourists could get out and go see the island. Some people book a tour and tour the island, others go shopping and others wander around in the area around the port. There is also the option to stay on board and not go off. I went off at all the ports my two cruises stopped. It is strange to get out of the boat and set foot on land. For a while I still felt like I was moving and my walk was a bit not in straight line, because I was still correcting my steps which is necessary when walking on a cruise ship.
I come from an island at which cruises stop. It was nice to experience what they experience visiting Curaçao on their cruise. The sea legs, the hustlers around the cruise ship trying to lure people into buying things or go on a tour. I was happy seeing other islands in the Caribbean. The nature and culture were different on all the islands I visited. Something I would not have experienced if there weren't cruises. I cruised in my teens and as a young adult with my parents and sisters visiting:
San Juan, Puerto Rico
St. Maarten
St. Thomas, USA Virgin Islands
Dominica
Martinique
Barbados
New Orleans, USA
Tampa, USA
Cozumel, Mexico
I probably miss a few islands on this list, but it is too long ago to remember all the islands.
And of course the once in a lifetime or for me twice in a lifetime experience of being rocked all day. This was the least pleasant thing of the cruise being dizzy almost all the time on the cruise ship. It stops after being on land for a while but on board never. It is a constant factor to deal with, but I still enjoyed my meals, the entertainment, reading a book and looking out at sea. And of course happy to get of the boat in the ports and have steady land.
