Blacksmithing Weapon and Armor Qualities are non-magical variations that alter the performance, structure, or handling of a base item. These qualities can be added during forging or applied later through skilled modification, allowing crafted equipment to gain unique utility, strengths, and tradeoffs beyond the standard design.
Some weapons are forged with special qualities that take effect when the wielder lands a particularly strong hit. If the weapon’s base damage roll falls within the top twenty-five percent of its natural damage range, the forged quality is applied.
This check uses only the weapon’s base damage die, ignoring Strength, enchantments, feats, and other modifiers.
Weapons that deal less than 1d4 damage cannot be created with Damage Range Triggers.
On a critical hit, the forged quality always applies since the base damage is maximized.
When pricing modifications, an item’s Base Value (BV) is:
BV = base item market price + masterwork surcharge (if masterwork).
Ignore all magical enhancement value (a +1 weapon uses the same BV as its nonmagical version, or its masterwork version if applicable).
A weapon or suit of armor can have up to 3 modifications, provided they do not logically conflict.
Modification costs are calculated in order by slot. Let C1, C2, C3 be the gp cost of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd modification applied to the item.
First modification:
C1 = 0.20 × BV
Second modification:
C2 = 0.50 × (BV + C1)
Third modification:
C3 = 0.80 × (BV + C1 + C2)
Total Cost
Total modification cost = C1 + C2 + C3 (for the number of slots used).
Some modifications are more complex or impactful than others. Each modification is assigned a Tier, which applies a multiplier to that modification’s slot cost.
Minor: ×0.75
Standard: ×1.0
Major: ×1.5
Superior: ×2.0
After calculating a modification’s slot cost (C1, C2, or C3), multiply that slot cost by the modification’s Tier multiplier.
Let Cx be the slot cost for the modification being applied:
Final Modification Cost = Cx × Tier Multiplier
Round each slot cost to the nearest 5 sp (0.5 gp).
Each modification slot has a crafting time cost.
First modification: 4 hours * Tier Modifier
Second modification: 8 hours * Tier Modifier
Third modification: 16 hours * Tier Modifier
This represents increasing difficulty as the item becomes more customized.
