National Tango Day is celebrated in Argentina on December 11. This date was chosen to commemorate the birthdays of two men known for their contribution to promoting Argentine tango: Carlos Gardel and Julio de Caro. Gardel, who became an international sensation as a tango singer and film actor in the early 20th century, was born on December 11th in 1890 in Uruguay. De Caro, another prominent Argentine tango musician, was also born on December 11th but some nine years after Gardel. He was a violinist, composer, and tango orchestra conductor. His music introduced a “softer” and more passionate violin, which forever replaced the somewhat “marching” tango-arrangements from earlier recording years. In 1977, the Argentine government made December 11 the national day of tango.
In 2009, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) approved a joint proposal by Argentina and Uruguay to include the tango in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists.
