Sino-Philippine Manuscripts
Report by Bruce Cruikshank, December 2008
I visited the Hispanic Society of America and worked with the manuscripts and imprints 16 and 17 December 2008. The folks there had done yeoman work in preparing two library carts of manuscripts and imprints as well as a preliminary list of items in the collection. I had done some preliminary work before arriving and was thus able to get right to work.
I ended up working up a list of 135 items, which I include with this short overview. Most but not all of these items were purchased about one hundred years ago. Acquisitions continue, with one of the more recent the manuscript listed below by Fray Juan de los Angeles. Of these 135, I was able to briefly examine 114—time did not permit me to see 9 mss. And 12 imprints. Of the 135, 99 are manuscripts, 35 are imprints, and 1 refers to a collection of 19th-century photographs of sites associated with Russell Sturgis (see the list, Photographs). Many of the manuscripts contain multiple items—the one with the most numerous inclusions is of course the 127 folders in the Tournon collection (see under Maillard de Tournon)—and some manuscripts contain printed materials as well. Of the 135 items, 110 deal primarily with the Philippines, 15 with China, and 10 with other areas (multiple areas in East Asia, Japan, Formosa, Latin America, etc.).
Working just with the Philippine and China items, and using the earliest identified date, I found that the collection is remarkably rich in 17th century items—33% of the China items and 29% of the Philippine ones date from that period:
16th century: China 1, 7%
Philippines 1, 1%
17th century China 5, 33%
Philippines 32, 29%
18th century China 8, 53%
Philippines 39, 35%
19th century China
Philippines 33, 30%
Not dated China 1, 7%
Philippines 5, 5%
Total China 15, 100%
Philippines 110, 100%
Having so many 16th and 17th century manuscripts and publications makes the collection significant. In terms of content, the collection also demands full cataloguing and accessibility to scholars, a point I will reiterate at the end of this report.
Twelve manuscripts and three imprints deal with China, mainly concerning the Chinese Rites Controversy—see the entries under the previously mentioned Maillard de Tournon as well as under Jesuits, Thomas, Elorriaga, and Papeles portugueses. Less numerous but perhaps even more important for scholars of China would be the following two entries:
Cortes, Adriano de las, 1578-1629. Primera [-segunda] parte de la relacion qve escriue el padre Adriano de las Cortes ... del viage naufragio y captiuerio que con otras personas padecio en Chaucheo, reyno de la gran China, con lo demas que vio en lo que della anduuo. s.l.: [1621-1626]. Handwritten ms., many interesting illustrations of daily life, good condition, probably important for seventeenth-century social history.
Historia natural añadida, y sacada a luz por el Doctor Jincio [Guideways through Mountains
and Seas (Shanhaijing). Natural history, expanded and published by Doctor
Jincio]. Manila, 1787, Sept. 10. José Villanueva, translator. Binding weak,
otherwise good condition. Good, quaint illustrations, folios not numbered.
Most of the Philippine items—28 imprints, one set of photographs, and 81 mss.-- are much smaller in quantity and intersect many more topics without the sustained focus one finds with the Chinese Rites manuscripts. The closest exceptions would be the remarkable items listed in the six entries under Solivieres y Miera having to do with the Spanish administration of the province of Isabella from 1891-93. Also intriguing for Philippine scholars are the 17th-18th century references to western Visayan marriage, divorce, concubinage, witchcraft issues listed under thirteen headings. For convenience to the reader of this report, I have placed a list of this baker’s dozen on the following page. As with many of the early Philippine manuscripts, these are on rice paper, are in excellent condition and have been protected with pocket binders. We are remarkably weak in Philippine history on information on social relations in general, and information such as this from the 17th and 18th centuries is perhaps unique. These items are a treasure and one hopes they are fully catalogued and made available to the scholarly community in digital or other publication.

Other treasures exist in the Philippine manuscripts. There are three items listed under Calamba dealing with the disputes between Dominicans and tenants in the 1880s. For scholars working on the life and times of the national hero José Rizal, these documents from his family municipality will be of great interest. For those studying this and other late 19th-century political issues leading to the Philippine declarations of independence in 1896 and 1898, they will want to look as well at:
Gutiérrez de Salazar, Pedro. Las proscripciones de Sila en Filipinas por ... Carlos
M. de la Torre.... [Manila]: [ca. 1870]. Hiersemann, ?#, #397, “manuscrito
original ó borrador del folleto impreso en Manila 1870.” Important, letter book,
includes confidential or reserved correspondence; 298ff.
Also in the late nineteenth century is information on a 1868 expedition against the highlanders of northern Luzon, written by an Esteban Peñarrubia and entitled Diario de operacionees de la columna que salió de la villa de Bangued, prov. de Abra, en 8 de Marzo de 1868 para recorrer varias rancherías independientes del este de la Gran Cordillera. Eighteenth-century political and economic history shows up in the reports of the fiscales for 1759, 1762, 1764, and 1766 listed under Spain. Real Audiencia. Philippine Islands. Other items of interest for Filipinistas include 1803 shipping data in the source listed under Compañía de Filipinas as well as the circa 1786 Diario de la navegación del navio Aguila de la Real Compañía de Filipinas ... con destino a Manila by Muñoz y San Clemente.
The last two items to highlight in the Philippine collection are a remarkable 2-volume manuscript entitled Vocabulario Pangasinan, which for linguists and students of Pangasinense may be of great importance. Perhaps the most understated treasure in this remarkable collection of Chinese and Philippine materials is the work by Luis Née, botanist with the 18th-century Malaspina expedition, entitled Disertacion sobre el cultivo del arroz en Filipinas. Trituracion del arroz. Lista de las Variedades de Arrozes … en las Provincias de Albay, Camarines, La Laguna é Ilo-Ilo. Lista de las Variedades del pueblo de Mauban…. This 56 ff. manuscript, dated 1793, should be of great interest to those studying that expedition as well as scientists working with the history of rice varieties in the islands.
This is an important collection of materials. One hundred years ago Emma Blair and James Robertson wrote on page 42 of volume 53 of their 55-volume collection of Philippine materials that “The Hispanic Society of New York City, lately inaugurated by Mr. Archer M. Huntington, has valuable Philippine books and MSS. However, as the collection has not yet been opened to scholars, it is impossible to state the extent of Philippine material.” It is time that a full, descriptive catalog of the Chinese and Philippine materials be developed, that the collection’s riches be communicated to the scholarly community, and that all or shorter portions of the collection be reproduced digitally and placed on a web site so that scholars around the world can more conveniently explore the items listed below.

[3] A concise and useful summary of Maillard de Tournon’s work and imprisonment in China can be found in the Handbook of Christianity in China. Volume One: 635-1800, ed. Nicolas Standaert, pp. 358-60. Two further references are found in D. E. Mungello, Curious Land. Jesuit Accommodation and the Origins of Sinology (Honolulu: University of Hawai’i Press, 1989), p. 293n155: “The story of the De Tournon legation is told in some detail in Antonio Sisto Rosso, Apostolic legations to China in the eighteenth century (South Pasadena, 1948), pp. 157-186 & in Francis A. Rouleau, S.I., “Maillard de Tournon, Papal legate at the Court of Peking,” Archivum Historicum Societatis Iesu 31 (1962), 264-323. The latter article was revised, but not yet republished by Fr. Rouleau prior to his death.”
[4] “Maillard Tournon, Charles Thomas; and others:--[Papers regarding the concession of an indulgence for twenty years for the altar in the cathedral of Manila.] Manila, 1704 and 1711. Consists of the following: I. Copy of an indulgence given by Tournon, the patriarch of Antioch, who was at that time prevented in Manila from continuing his journey to China, Nov. 15, 1704; 6 pp. folio, written in red and black ink. II. The Latin text of the indulgence, signed by Tournon and his chancellor and interpreter, Candela and Mariani. III. Permission for its promulgation, by means of the inquisitor, Rayo Doria; Dec. 13, 1704. IV. The approval by the dean of the church, Domingo de Valencia; Dec. 11, 1704. V. Attestation of the secretary, Hernando de Legaspi, of the accuracy of the copy; June 18, 1711; with his signature. VI. Attestation of the above secretary’s signatures by three notaries; July 11, 1711. VII. A letter to the pope from 11 members of the ecclesiastical cabildo of Manila, asking the concession of twenty years from the time of writing for the indulgence granted by Tournon. Cited by Hiersemann’s Catalog, #327, where it is no. 1225. ….” BRPI, v. 53 (1908), p. 324.
[5] “This collection embraces original letters and documents, and transcripts from original letters and documents, in regard to the Philippines and China during the period when Tournon was sent as papal legate to China. It covers in general the years 1635-1742. In great part it is still unpublished. The various documents are collected under the following divisions: I. From the Chinese missions before Tournon’s voyage. II. Personal letters of Tournon; collection of his expedition. III. Tournon’s voyage from Cadiz to Pekin. IV. Sojourn of Tournon in Pekin (1705, 1706); return from Pekin to Macao (1706, 1707). V. Tournon’s sojourn in Macao from June, 1707, to his death, June 8, 1710; as well as all matters relative to his death. VI. Letters from and to Tournon. VII. Events in China and condition of the questions concerning the rites up to the time of Tournon’s death. VIII. Angelita: his youth; travels with Tournon; sojourn in Macao; return voyages to Manila, Mexico, and Rome; etc., until 1736. IX. Letters from foreigners in regard to personal matters. This magnificent collection contains 127 pieces, many of which are subdivided into many parts. Many of them are written from Manila, and treat of Philippina. Lack of space does not permit an individual listing of the documents bearing on the Philippines. The collection is described in Hiersemann’s Catalog, no. 327, pp. 199-234. ….” BRPI, v. 53 (1908), pp.

[6] Archie R. Crouch, et al., Christianity in China. A Scholars’ Guide to Resources in the Libraries and Archives of the United States (Armonk, New York: M. E. Sharpe, Inc., 1989), pp. 24-25, reference to the Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural History, University of San Francisco, Ignatian Heights, San Francisco, California, and on p. 25 information on the Francis A. Rouleau Microfilm Archive, copies “of 50,000 folios and exerpts in European languages” from “archives of the Society of Jesus in Rome and Paris, the British Museum in London, Vatican Archives, and other archives in Europe and the Philippines” for “research on Cardinal Charles Maillard de Tournon’s mission to China and the rites controversy.” They apparently have a catalogue and it might be useful to send a list of the mss. in the Society’s collection to them to see whether there are unique or extremely rare items in this large set of volumes. In this same Crouch volume are references to Maillard de Tournon-related items at Yale, Newberry, the University of Chicago, University of Indiana at Bloomington, and the University of Minnesota, but clearly the only significant collection for comparison and collaboration is the University of San Francisco one.
[7] Listed as Muñoz de San Clemente, Francisco, but changed it to accord with other items in the list by or about him.

[9] BRPI, v. 53(1908), p. 328, has an entry that probably is this one: “Ramirez, Joachim Joseph:--[Petition in regard to the indulgence for the Philippines.] [Manila, 1712?] This is a letter to Angelita in which his support is asked for the indulgence. ….”
[10] “Rayo Doria, Francisco, and others:--[Eight original letters concerning missionary affairs in the Philippines.] 1706-1715. These are as follows: I. Others by Rayo Doria also mentioned in BRPI, pp. 323-24, including one on p. 323 with “Original letters, treatises, records, etc. (12 documents in all) concerning the work of the missionary, Giovannni Batista Sidotti and his martyrdom in Japan …,” dated from 1713 to 1731, with a description taken from Hiersemann, 327, #1288.
[11] The definitive sources for Father Torrubia are Lorenzo Pérez, O.F.M., “Fr. José Torrubia, procurador de la Provincia de San Gregorio de Filipinas,” Archivo Ibero-americano, 36:111 (July-September 1933), 321-64; and Odilo Gómez Parente, O.F.M., “Vida y Escritos del Padre José Torrubia,” IN Crónica de la Provincia Franciscana de Santa Cruz de la Española y Caracas (Caracas: Fuentes para la Historia Colonial de Venezuela, 1972), 9-177. The former is highly critical of Father Torrubia whereas the latter is more nuanced and supportive of Father Torrubia’s life, actions, scholarship, and controversial relationship with the Philippine Franciscan Province.
